Interdisciplinary Pre-Law Minor

Minor Requirements

Minor Requirements 18 credit hours chosen from across offerings in the Schools of Arts & Letters, Business, and Social Sciences. Minimum grade of C- in each course and overall GPA of 2.0 across all 18 credits required.

Additional Stipulations

  • Two of the three courses taken to fulfill the elective boxes must be at the 300 level or higher.
  • Only two of the three courses taken to fulfill the elective boxes can come from any single discipline.

Required Courses

Students with a pre-law minor will complete the following three courses. Between them, these three courses will

emphasize four of the ABA’s recommended skill/competency areas, viz. problem solving, oral communication/listening, background knowledge, and exposure to the law.

  • PHIL-P150 – Elementary Logic
  • POLS-Y304 – Constitutional Law
  • PHIL-P113 – Introduction to Debate, Argument, and Persuasion OR SPCH-S228 – Argumentation and Debate (prerequisite/co requisite: SPCH-S121 and sophomore standing)

Students with a pre-law minor are also required to complete one course from each of the three distribution areas listed below. These distribution areas correspond to combinations of the remaining ABA recommended skill/competency areas.

  • ENG-L 371 – Critical Practices (prerequisite/co requisite: ENG-W131 with a C or higher)
  • HIST-A 302 – Revolutionary America, 1763-1791 (prerequisite/co requisite: HIST-H105 or HIST-H 106 or instructor consent)
  • HIST-A 303 – United States 1792-1829 (prerequisite/co requisite: HIST-H 105 or HIST-H 106 or instructor consent)
  • POLS-Y 349 – Comparative Public Policy
  • POLS-Y 384 – Developments in American Political Thought
  • POLS-Y 392 – Problems of Contemporary Political Philosophy
  • SOC-S 360 – Topics in Social Policy (prerequisite/co requisite: SOC-S 163 or 3 hours of Intro Sociology)
  • SOC-S 403 – Industry, Labor and Community (prerequisite/co requisite: SOC-S 163 or 3 hours of  Intro Sociology)

Please note that background knowledge includes a broad understanding of history, political thought and contemporary American political system, analyzing financial data, human behavior and social interaction, and understanding of diverse cultures.
