Bachelor of Science in Education/Special Education with Mathematics Concentration

The IU Bloomington School of Education offers a Bachelor of Science in Special Education. Students majoring in secondary special education obtain teacher licensure at the secondary level (grades 5-12) in special education (Exceptional Needs – Mild Intervention) and have the option of adding licensure in Mathematics. Students take challenging coursework in their identified content area and in special education that focuses on meeting the unique needs of individuals with mild/moderate-incidence disabilities in various educational settings.

Content Requirements (26 credits)

A 2.5 GPA is required in the Content Area

A grade of C- or higher is required in each course. (Check with the department regarding when courses will be offered.)

Elementary Mathematics
  • EDUC-N 101 Teach & Learn Elementary Math I (3 cr.)
  • EDUC-N 103 Teach & Learn Elementary Math II (3 cr.)
  • Mathematical Modeling (3 cr.)
Analysis
  • MATH-M/S 211 Calculus I (4 cr.)
  • MATH-M/S 212 Calculus II (4 cr.)
Electives
  • Complete 9 additional credits of math electives. To be chosen from 300-400 level math courses. (The following courses are recommended: MATH-E 265 [Exception]; MATH-M 365; MATH-M 330; MATH-M 380; or MATH-T 336.)

Professional Education (72 credits)

A 2.5 overall GPA is required in the Professional Education.

A grade of C or higher is required in each professional EDUC course. The following courses must be completed before student teaching.
