Speech and Hearing Sciences

Major in Speech and Hearing Sciences—B.A.

The B.A. Major in Speech and Hearing Sciences curriculum provides a general liberal arts base, with strong preparation in the normal processes of speech, language, and hearing along with specialized training in communication disorders. The B.A. is for students who are seeking a broad liberal arts and sciences education that centers on the processes of normal and disordered communication.


Students must complete at least 30 credit hours in Speech and Hearing Sciences, including the CASE Credit Hour and Residency Requirements and the following:

  1. Introductory Sequence. Complete both courses:
    • SPHS-S 106 Hearing Science: An Overview
    • SPHS-S 108 Speech and Language Sciences: An Overview
  2. Core courses. Complete all courses:
    • SPHS-S 111 Introduction to Phonetics for Speech and Hearing Sciences
    • SPHS-S 201 Speech Anatomy and Physiology
    • SPHS-S 307 Cognitive and Communicative Aspects of Aging
    • SPHS-S 311 Introduction to Research in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (PSY-P 211 may be substituted for S311 for students who also pursue a major in Psychology)
    • SPHS-S 333 Childhood Language
    • SPHS-S 350 Speech Science
    • SPHS-S 375 Hearing Science
  3. Advanced courses. Complete two (2) different courses selected from (Note: selecting a different topic of the same course will not fulfill this requirement):
    • SPHS-S 425 Topical Seminar in Speech Science
    • SPHS-S 427 Topical Seminar in Language Sciences
    • SPHS-S 429 Topical Seminar in Hearing Science
  4. Additional requirements. Complete the following (a–e):
    1. One of the following:
      • PSY-P 101 Introductory Psychology I
      • PSY-P 155 Introduction to Psychological and Brain Sciences
    2. LING-L 203 Introduction to Linguistic Analysis
    3. One of the following:
      • STAT-S 303 Applied Statistical Methods for the Life Sciences
      • PSY-K 300 Statistical Techniques
    4. One of the following:
      • 3 credit hours in biology
      • ANAT-A 215 Basic Human Anatomy
      • PHSL-P 215 Basic Human Physiology
    5. PHYS-P 105 Basic Physics of Sound
Students must also complete the B.A. degree requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences.
