Course Descriptions
- PACE-C 100 Introduction to Theories of Leadership (3 cr.) Interdisciplinary introduction to theories of leadership. Students research, compare and analyze different leadership styles; assess how theories of leadership evolve; and study how leaders thrive in different contexts, typically in strong relationship with their followers
- PACE-C 200 Issue Forum (1 cr.) Dialogue and deliberation activities structured as a half-day forum during which participants interact with an expert panel and discuss a current controversial issue previously selected by PACE student leaders. Includes a pre-forum assignment, active participation in the forum, and a post-forum response paper. May be repeated for a maximum of 3 credit hours in PACE-C 200 and PACE-C 400.
- PACE-C 250 Leadership and Public Policy (3 cr.) Interdisciplinary introduction to American public leadership and policy making. Explores theoretical and empirical work on American politics and civil society from the local community to the nation’s capital. Introduces skills of effective political and civic engagement. Credit given for only one of PACE-C 250, S250, or C211.
- PACE-S 250 Honors Leadership and Public Policy (3 cr.) For students in the Hutton Honors College. Interdisciplinary introduction to American public leadership and policy making. Explores theoretical and empirical work on American politics and civil society from the local community to the nation's capital. Introduces skills of effective political and civic engagement. Credit given for only one of PACE-S 250, C250 or C211.
- PACE-C 295 Citizenship and Careers (2 cr.) P: Consent of program. PACE Program concepts and ideas applied to career and citizenship skill development. Provides perspectives on how PACE and other undergraduate coursework can help students realize their long-term educational, career, and civic goals.
- PACE-C 300 Issues in Political and Civic Engagement (3 cr.) Intensive study and analysis of selected political or civic engagement issues. Topics will vary and will be listed in the online Schedule of Classes. May be repeated with a different topic for a maximum of 6 credit hours.
- PACE-C 350 Leadership, Social Movements, and Modern American Politics (3 cr.) Case studies of leaders and social movements across the political spectrum and their impact on politics in twentieth- and early twenty-first-century America. Introduces social movement and leadership theories and how they illuminate these studies. Provides opportunities for students to develop their own leadership skills.
- PACE-C 440 Leading a Forum Discussion (1 cr.) P: Consent of program. Training in facilitation of democratic deliberation as preparation for leading small group discussions for the PACE Issue Forum. Includes training, practice, service at the Issue Forum, and debriefing meeting. Final reflection paper required. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours.
- PACE-C 450 Capstone Seminar (3 cr.) P: Consent of program. Required capstone seminar for students who have completed all other certificate requirements. Provides students with the opportunity to integrate academic study, experiential learning, and co-curricular activities, to demonstrate understanding of American political and civic life, and to document individual learning and development.
- PACE-X 473 Internship in Political and Civic Engagement (1-6 cr.) P: Consent of program. Students will complete a mentored internship providing field experience in political and civic engagement. Includes an orientation session before and a structured evaluation afterward. S/F grading. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credit hours in X473 and C410.
- PACE-X 490 Readings in Political and Civic Engagement (1-6 cr.) P: Consent of faculty supervisor. Independent readings under the supervision of an approved faculty mentor. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credit hours in X490 and C420.
