B.A. in Journalism
Second Concentrations—Bachelor of Arts in Journalism
Purpose

To achieve the breadth of knowledge and expertise and to refine the critical thinking, analytic reasoning and problem-solving skills essential for future success, B.A.J. students must complete a second concentration of at least 24 unique credit hours in a field other than Journalism or Public Relations.

General Policies
  • Students must complete a minimum of 24 credit hours. Students using certificates or minors and other credentials that require fewer credit hours are required to complete additional coursework to meet the 24 credit hour minimum.
  • Unless otherwise noted below, students must earn a C- or higher in each course and a grade point average of at least 2.000 in all courses taken for the second concentration.
Second Concentration Options

As a means of completing the second concentration, choose one of the following options:

College-approved Certificate or Minor
  • Complete a College minor, College certificate, or other credential transcripted by the College as part of completing the hours required for a B.A.J. second concentration.
  • Be certain to follow standard policies for declaring these credentials. Completion of the B.A.J. second concentration will not result in automatic transcription of these outside credentials.
  • Credit hours from coursework outside the College that are applied to credentials within the B.A.J. second concentration will be included in the 100 College of Arts and Sciences credit hours. These credits from outside the College do not count toward the major hours limit, however.
Additional B.A.J. Specializations
  • Complete up to two (2) additional B.A.J. Specializations (9 or 18 cr.) plus electives to reach 24 credit hours. Students should consult with their Media School academic advisor about this option because restrictions apply when combining additional specializations with minors. There are also limits to how many credit hours may be taken in the major.
  • The additional B.A.J. specializations are included on the transcript.
B.A. Media Concentrations and/or Specialization(s)
  • Complete either:
    1. One (1) of the 15-credit-hour concentrations available through the B.A. in Media and an appropriate 9-credit-hour Media School specialization to achieve the 24 credit hour minimum; or
    2. Two (2) B.A. in Media Specializations (9 or 18 cr.) plus electives or other credential to reach 24 crdit hours.
  • At least 12 of the 24 concentration and specialization credits must be in either MSCH-F courses or something other than MSCH to ensure breadth beyond coursework that is traditionally associated with journalism, public relations or the other mass communications disciplines.
  • Students should consult with their academic advisor about this option because restrictions apply when combining additional specializations with minors. There are also limits to how many credit hours may be taken in the major.
  • B.A. Media concentrations and specializations are not included on the transcript for B.A.J. students.
Outside Concentration
  • Complete one of the options in the Approved Outside Concentrations list below as part of completing the hours required for a B.A.J. second concentration. All options require the completion of an established minor or certificate.
Second Degree
  • Complete an approved second degree. An application is required. A second degree for a first degree B.A.J. student can be:
    1. Any of the following degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences (see the College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate website for eligibility requirements):
      • B.A., but not with Major in Media
