Medical Imaging Technology (Clinical/Internship and Non-Clinical Tracks)
The Medical Imaging Technology (MIT) program is located on the Indiana University-Indianapolis campus and housed in the IU School of Medicine Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences. This advanced imaging program is only open to registered technologists in RT(R), RT(T), RT(N), RDMS, or NMTCB.
Description of the Profession Medical imaging technologists are highly skilled professionals qualified to deliver patient care in various specialized imaging modalities, including cardiac interventional (CI), vascular interventional (VI), computed tomography (CT), mammography (M) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Utilizing principles of radio-waves and radiation, they determine imaging parameters and accurately position patients for a wide range or diagnostic examinations. Many of the patient examinations are highly specific, using computers or computerized equipment. Medical imaging technologists are also capable of assessing the technical quality of the image and providing basic patient care. The technologist must function as a member of the health care team.
Graduates of the Program Graduates earn a Bachelor of Science degree and can become eligible to take specialty examinations depending on their major area of concentration.
Credentials Required to Practice From the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT): graduates must have been previously credentialed in RT(R), RT(S), RT(VS), RT(T) or RT(N). From the American Registry of Diagnostic Sonography (ARDS): graduates must be credentialed in RDMS, RDCS, or RVT. From the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB): graduates must be credentialed in CNMT.
The MIT Clinical Track prepares graduates for advanced credentials in CI, CT, M, MRI, and VI; employers may require an advance credential.
Indiana Requirements to Practice A state license is required to operate radiation producing devices. The state of Indiana accepts ARRT and NMTCB credentials to satisfy educational requirements.
If you hold one of the abovementioned credentials, contact Debra Patterson. If you do not hold one of these credentials, contact the Health Professions Programs office at askhpp@iu.edu or (317) 278-4752.
