Graduation: Degree Completion Application

All Bachelor’s degree students must complete and submit an application for graduation (degree completion).

Applications to graduate must be submitted at least six (6) months before the desired graduation date. Failure to submit an application at least six months early may delay graduation and prevent the student's name from being entered in the graduation ceremony program.

Even if you are not planning to attend a Commencement Ceremony, you must still apply to for degree completion (graduation) from your program.

The degree completion/graduation application is the only means of letting the undergraduate recorder know that the student plans to complete the degree. This cues the recorder to audit a student's progress toward satisfaction of all degree requirements for a specific degree certification date. If you do not tell the recorder when you want to graduate, nothing happens.

Bachelor’s degree students receive their degrees from the School of Public Health-Bloomington, and must therefore apply for graduation (degree completion) at https://sph.indiana.edu/forms/student/graduation-application/graduation-application.php.

The school is not responsible for the degree certification of seniors who fail to meet this requirement.

Bachelor’s degrees are conferred in May, June, July, and December.

Students completing degree requirements in May, June, or July may attend the May ceremony.

  • These students are strongly encouraged to complete and submit the application to graduate by October 1 of the previous year. October 1 is the priority date which guarantees efficient processing of the application.
  •  February 1 is the last day on which names may be included in print materials related to graduation events.

Students completing degree requirements in December may attend the December ceremony.

  • These students are strongly encouraged to complete and submit the application to graduate by May 1 of the same year. May 1 is the priority date which guarantees efficient processing of the application.
  • October 1 is the last day on which names may be included in print materials related to graduation events

Notes on the difference between “Degree Completion” and participation in the Commencement (Graduation) Ceremony and/or the SPH-B Recognition Ceremony:

IU Bloomington holds two (2) Commencement Ceremonies per year, to celebration the graduation of all IUB students. One is held in May and one in December.

The School of Public Health IU Bloomington also holds a Recognition Ceremony for our school’s graduates on the evening of the Commencement Ceremony. The time and date of this event varies year by year, so please see this link for further information about the event: https://publichealth.indiana.edu/student-portal/graduation/index.html

As different student population groups graduate during various months of the academic year, students who will complete their degree requirements, are eligible to participate in 1 of the 2 ceremonies offered, based on the planned month of their degree completion.

  • Bachelor’s degrees are conferred in May, June, July, and December.
  •  Students completing a degree in May, June, or July may attend the May Commencement (graduation) ceremony.
  •  Students completing a degree in December may attend the December Commencement (graduation) ceremony.

Important: If a student participates/walks in Commencement, but there are still pending degree requirements at the time of the ceremony, their degree will not be issued until the degree requirements are fullfilled.
