Academic Standing

Academic Standing for Undergraduate Students

Good Academic Standing

  • An undergraduate student is in Good Academic Standing at the end of each semester when the student has:
    • a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00; and
    • a minimum semester GPA of 2.00.

Academic Watch

  • An undergraduate student is placed on Academic Watch by SPH-B when:
    • the student’s semester GPA falls below 2.00; and
    • the student’s cumulative GPA is at or above 2.00; or
    • the student has any additional academic risk factors, such as:
      • one or more semesters with a GPA of 0.00;
      • pending incomplete grades;
      • a cumulative GPA below 2.00 as a first-year student due to IU dual credit course grades;
      • cumulative GPA between 2.00 and 2.50;
      • applied for graduation in the term and did not graduate.
    • The goal of Academic Watch is to notify a student:
      • of concerns about their academic performance; and
      • they must seek support and address academic challenges to return to good academic standing.
    • Academic Watch appears on the student’s advising record but not on the student's transcript.

 Academic Alert

  • An undergraduate student is placed on Academic Alert by SPH-B if:
    • the student’s cumulative GPA falls below 2.00; or
    • the student has two or more semesters with a GPA below 2.00 and a cumulative GPA above 2.00.
  • The goal of Academic Alert is to notify a student:
    • of major concerns about their academic performance;
    • that they are at risk of Academic Dismissal from SPH-B; and
    • that they must seek increased support and address academic challenges to return to Good Academic Standing.
  • Academic Alert appears on the student’s advising record but not on the student’s transcript.

 Academic Dismissal from SPH-B

  • An undergraduate student is placed on Academic Dismissal status from SPH-B when:
    • the student’s cumulative GPA falls below 2.00; and
    • the student has two semesters below 2.00.
  • SPH-B Dismissal Types
    • Students who are dismissed from SPH-B for the first time must sit out one regular (fall or spring) semester before applying for reinstatement.
    • Students who are dismissed from SPH-B for the second time must sit out one calendar year before applying for reinstatement.
    • Students who are dismissed from SPH-B for the third time are not eligible for reinstatement to SPH-B.
  • Academic Dismissal from SPH-B appears on the student’s advising record but not on the student’s transcript.

 Academic Dismissal from IU Bloomington

  • An undergraduate student will be dismissed from IU Bloomington when the student:
    • has been dismissed from their academic unit;
    • is not eligible for another major; and
    • has a cumulative GPA below a 2.00.
  • Academic Dismissal from IU Bloomington appears on the student’s advising record but not on the student’s transcript.
