Exceptions to Academic Policies and Requirements

An exception (course substitution) to an academic requirement or policy may be approved by the assistant dean for graduate education for a School of Public Health-Bloomington graduate student. Approvals of exceptions (substitutions) are not guaranteed and are subject to various factors.

For Master’s (MS and MPH) and Graduate Certificate students, the Course Substitution Request Form is available at one.iu.edu/task/iub/current-sph-students under the “Forms” link. The student's academic advisor must approve the form, and it is then evaluated by the Graduate Recorder and the Assistant Dean of Graduate Education.

This form must be submitted and approved prior to when the substituting course is taken.

For Doctoral Students, the chair of a doctoral student's advisory committee and the minor representative (if applicable) will approve course exceptions via the Graduate School of IU Bloomington’s eDoc: https://one.iu.edu/task/iub/request-for-substitution-or-waiver-of-program-requirements - once SPH-B has approved the substitutions, they will go to the Graduate School for review and approval.
