Bachelor of Science in Health & Wellness Design, Tourism, Hospitality, and Event Management Major

Description of Program

The Tourism, Hospitality, and Event Management (THEM) program prepares students to enter one of the world’s largest and most dynamic industries. Tourism encompasses travel for business, recreation, leisure, and wellness. While the broader industry includes transportation, food services, and lodging, students in this program concentrate on the strategic marketing and management of tourism facilities and destinations—with a distinct emphasis on wellness and public health.

Graduates pursue careers in a wide range of settings, including tourism agencies, hotels, restaurants, hospitals, resorts, spas, convention centers, theme parks, visitor centers, golf courses, cruise lines, and airlines.

Degree Requirements

This four-year program leads to a Bachelor of Science in Health & Wellness Design with a major in Tourism, Hospitality, and Event Management (THEM). It prepares students to become leaders in the tourism industry by developing core competencies in administration, budgeting, communication, event planning, marketing, and management—skills applicable across a wide range of career paths.

  • completion of general education requirements.
  • completion of the Tourism, Hospitality, and Event Management major requirements.
  • a minimum of 120 successfully completed credit hours that count toward the degree program.
  • a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA.
  • no pass/fail except for free electives.
General Education (20–39 credits) 

All undergraduate students must complete the IU Bloomington General Education Common Ground Requirements.

Major (72 cr.)

A combined 2.0 cumulative GPA in courses used to complete the THEM majors courses, THEM professional courses, and THEM electives.

+ Courses followed by an S&H notation apply toward completion of both the major requirement and the general education, social and historical studies requirement.


Special Opportunities

Tourism students can deepen their understanding of international travel and global tourism systems through a variety of study abroad programs. In addition, internship experiences allow students to explore career interests and gain a competitive edge in specialized fields such as wellness resort management, event planning, destination management, wellness tourism, and public health—all prior to graduation.
