Graduation: Degree Completion Application

Graduation: Degree Completion ApplicationAll graduate students must complete and submit an application to graduate.

Applications to graduate must be submitted at least six months before the desired graduation date. Failure to submit an application at least six months early may delay graduation and prevent the student's name from being entered in the graduation ceremony program. Even if you are not planning to attend a Commencement Ceremony, you must still apply to for degree completion (graduation) from your program.

The degree completion/graduation application is the only means of letting the graduate recorder know the student plans to complete the degree or certificate. This cues the recorder to audit a student's progress toward satisfaction of all degree requirements for a specific degree certification date. If you do not tell the recorder when you want to graduate, nothing happens.

Master's degree students and Graduate Certificate students receive their degrees or certificates from the School of Public Health-Bloomington, and must therefore apply for graduation at https://sph.indiana.edu/forms/student/graduation-application/graduation-application.php.

Ph.D. degree students receive their degrees from theGraduate School of IU Bloomington, and must therefore visit https://graduate.indiana.edu/academic-requirements/steps/phd.html, to view instructions regarding completion steps for the degree, including the application to participate in the Commencement Ceremony, which is a separate eDoc from the Defense Announcement eDoc. Please see the Doctoral Students section of the Policies and Procedures in the SPH-B Academic Bulletin for more information.

Master's degrees and Graduate Certificates are conferred in May, June, July, and December. Ph.D. degrees are conferred every month. Graduation commencement ceremonies take place in May and December.

Students completing a degree or certificate between January and August may attend the May ceremony. Students completing a degree or certificate between September and December may attend the December ceremony.

Notes on the difference between “Degree Completion” and participation in the Commencement (Graduation) Ceremony and/or the SPH-B Recognition Ceremony: IU Bloomington holds two (2) Commencement Ceremonies per year, to celebration the graduation of all IUB students. One is held in May and one in December.

SPH-B also holds a Recognition Ceremony the evening of each commencement for our students to recognize and celebrate our accomplishment with their SPH-B peers and faculty.

As different student population groups graduate during various months of the academic year, students who will complete their degree requirements, are eligible to participate in 1 of the 2 ceremonies offered, based on the planned month of their degree completion.

Master's degrees and Graduate Certificates are conferred in May, June, July, and December. Ph.D. degrees are conferred every month.

Students completing a degree or certificate between January and August may attend the May Commencement (graduation) ceremony. Students completing a degree or certificate between September and December may attend the December Commencement (graduation) ceremony.

If a student participates/walks in Commencement, but there are still pending degree requirements at the time of the ceremony, their degree or certificate will not be issued until those degree requirements are completed.
