General Description

German Master of Arts for Teachers
The IU Online Master of Arts for Teachers in German combines coursework in education and German.

If applying directly to the MAT, you must:

  • Have 20 hours in German coursework at the bachelor's level, or have completed at least two courses from the Graduate Certificate in German with a B or higher.
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum 3.0/4.0 GPA

To apply to this program, complete an online application that includes:

  • Transcripts
  • Personal statement (250 words)

Application Dates

  • Fall semester: Aug 1
  • Spring semester: Jan 1
  • Summer I semester: May 1
  • Summer II semester: Jun 15

To earn the M.A.T. in German, students must complete six graduate German and four graduate School of Education courses for 30 credits overall (18 credits in German and 12 credits in Education) and follow applicable Indiana University graduate policy.


I. German Component (18 cr)
The following six courses align with the program learning outcomes. Students must complete all six courses.

1. GER-T 510: Methods in German Instruction
2. GER-T 520: Grammar and Writing
3. GER-T 530: Film, Media, and Popular Culture
4. GER-T 540: Germany and the U.S.
5. GER-T 550: German Literature and Thought
6. GER-T 560: Culture and Society


II. Education Component (12 cr)
Students must complete all four courses.

1. EDUC-J 500: Instruction in the Context of the Curriculum
2. EDUC-P 507: Planning and Assessment
3. EDUC-H 520: Social Issues in Education
4. EDUC-Y 520: Strategies for Educational Inquiry
