IU Indianapolis

Indiana University Indianapolis (IU Indianapolis) is a forward-thinking institution that embodies Indiana University’s (IU) commitment to establishing one of the nation’s premier urban research universities.

IU has long played a critical leadership role in Indianapolis, and IU Indianapolis’s growth will build upon the successful legacy of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). In its more than 50 years, IUPUI faculty and staff have been dedicated to outstanding teaching and learning, resourceful innovation, community engagement, groundbreaking research, and support of diversity, equity, and inclusion. These efforts have garnered national recognition and have anchored IU’s presence in the capital city.

In June 2023, the IU and Purdue University boards of trustees approved a definitive agreement to formalize separation and realignment of the campus into two distinct entities: IU Indianapolis and Purdue University in Indianapolis effective July 1, 2024. The vast majority of academic programs, along with nearly 4,000 full-time faculty, 5,000 full-time professional and support staff, and 92% of all current IUPUI students (approximately 23,500 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students) have transitioned to become part of IU Indianapolis, creating a robust foundation for future growth.

IU Indianapolis, located in Indiana’s state capital—the 16th largest city in the country – is the 6th largest employer in the city, is home to the largest medical school in the country, one of the nation’s largest nursing schools, the state’s only dental school, and the world’s first school of philanthropy.

University College

University College serves as the academic home for nearly half of all first-year students, including students exploring majors or preparing for admission to their degree-granting school. University College students take classes in their intended major right away while benefitting from comprehensive advising, career guidance, and academic support. Equipped with confidence and readiness to succeed, University College students transition to their degree-granting school once they have met their program’s admission requirements.

The Schools

Fields of study or disciplines are organized into schools at IU Indianapolis. Each school has its own policies and procedures that govern all students enrolled within it. While most fields of study are housed within departments within these schools, some schools may refer to them by other names, such as divisions. Degree requirements and student eligibility for graduation are determined by the individual schools and departments, and to qualify for a degree, students must be enrolled in a school and complete a specific number of courses at IU Indianapolis. A current list of programs appears online.

Each school at IU Indianapolis features dedicated pages for admissions, an overview, course listings, and both undergraduate and graduate programs. Theses web pages provide detailed information on degree requirements for all degrees offered by school, policies and procedures, and faculty listing. Special teacher certification and honors information is also included where relevant.
