Informatics

Innovation permeates the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. Our rare combination of interdisciplinary programs - including informatics, computer science, data science, library science, information science, and intelligent systems engineering - makes our school one of the largest, broadest, and most accomplished of its kind.  Informatics is among the STEM programs in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for intelligent, collaborative, and hard-working students!  Indiana University's Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering is a diverse community and students have extraordinary opportunities such as internships, research, cultural programs, and global connections.  Employers from a variety of industries hire our graduates as well as provide internships for our students.  With a graduate degree in Informatics coupled with a student's undergraduate degree, they will have a first-rate education that will give them an extra edge in the job market.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Our students come from a variety of educational backgrounds - from technology to the sciences and liberal arts.  Some of our students have earned a bachelor's degree while others have earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree.  Likewise, some of our students enter the program with no work experience while other students have numerous years of work experience.

We will let you know as soon as we have reached a decision.

Occasionally, denied applicants contact us for an explanation. Unfortunately, we receive several hundred applications per year, and we do not have the staff to explain admission decisions on a case-by-case basi

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The admissions committee only reviews completed applications.  Email admit2iu@indiana.edu with questions.

To apply to any of the Informatics programs, students must submit the following:

  • Application

Online Graduate and Professional Admissions Application. 

  • Statement of Purpose

Upload a pdf version of the Statement of Purpose with the application.  Be sure to include the student's complete name as it appears on the e-application.  The statement should be sincere, direct, and most of all, written by the student.  The admissions committee wants to know about the student's academic goals, research interests, and abilities.  The student should explain why they want to be in the program.  The statement can be used to explain any anomalies in the student's academic record.  There is no word limit, but most statements are between 1-3 pages in length.  Updated versions are not accepted.

  • Resume

Upload a pdf version of the student's resume/CV with their online application. Updated versions are not accepted.

  • Official Academic Records: Transcripts

Submit transcripts via the online application from each previous undergraduate or graduate institution that you have attended.

  • Letters of Recommendation

Three (3) letters of recommendation are required.  In the recommendation section of the application, the student will need to list their recommender's name, title, address, phone number, and an email address.  Once the student submits their application, the recommenders will receive an automated recommendation request.  The student should encourage their recommenders to complete the recommendation request as soon as possible.

Recommendations should be from academic or professional references who can attest to the student's abilities, accomplishments, strengths, knowledge, experience, and motivation to do graduate work.  If the student has experience as a teaching assistant, they may want to consider asking the teaching supervisor to write a recommendation on the student's behalf.

  • GRE Scores

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is optional. GRE scores are good for five (5) years from the date you took the exam.  We do not have cut-offs for GRE scores, preferring instead to use the full information available in your application to evaluate.  Submit scores to institution code 1324 and department code 0402.  If your name on the test report differs from the name on the online application, please list the test score name in the comment section of the application.

  • TOEFL (for non-native English speakers)

All non-native English speakers are required to submit TOEFL scores, which measure English proficiency.  TOEFL scores are good for two (2) years from the date the student took the exam.  We expect a minimum score of 100.  NOTE: Informatics does not waive the TOEFL requirement and does not accept IELTS scores.

The student will need to have their official TOEFL scores sent directly to Indiana University using our school code - 1324.  

  • HCI/d Portfolio

All HCI/d applicants are required to submit a portfolio.  Portfolios may include any type of prior work samples such as a thesis, prototypes, writing samples, ethnographic work, photography, etc. These samples do not necessarily need to include only design work samples.  Focus on quality, rather than quantity.  The portfolio should be a single PDF document/file.  The student should upload their portfolio as a PDF file with the online application.  We do not accept updated versions.

APPLICATION REVIEW and NOTIFICATION

The admissions committee will begin reviewing M.S. applicants in mid-January, which will take several weeks. Applicants will receive a decision by mid-March via email.

DECISION DEADLINE FOR ADMITTED STUDENTS - APRIL 15

Admitted students will have until April 15 to accept our offer.  This is in the spirit of the Council of Graduate School Resolution.  If the student has not accepted our offer by April 15, we will withdraw our offer of acceptance.

FINANCIAL AWARDS

We have limited funds to distribute. The number of applications received and the competitiveness of those applications determines the number of financial awards we are able to offer.  None of our M.S. aid packages provides full tuition or a large stipend.  All completed applications are reviewed and considered for financial aid or scholarships.  Students who are offered admission will receive an admit letter which will detail the financial award, if any.

UNIVERSITY GRADUATE SCHOOL FELLOWSHIPS AND AWARDS

The University Graduate School offers several internal and external fellowships and awards. The application process and deadlines vary by fellowship and award, so be sure to read the requirements carefully.  If the student is interested in being nominated for an internal fellowship or award, email admit2iu@indiana.edu to make it clear that the student is interested in being nominated.
