Speech and Hearing Sciences

Major in Speech and Hearing Sciences—B.S.
Purpose

The B.S. Degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences provides a more scientific and mathematical background in the field. An undergraduate curriculum may be selected to provide a strong preparation for continued study at the graduate level in speech and hearing sciences.

Requirements

In addition to the CASE Credit Hour and Residency Requirements, students must complete the following requirements:

  1. Foundations
    1. CASE English Composition
    2. Mathematical Modeling (modified). Complete both of the following:
      • One course from MATH-V118, M118, S118, or the D116-D117 sequence
      • One course from MATH-J113, M119, M120, M211, M212, or any "M" course at the 200 level or higher
  2. CASE Foreign Language: proficiency in a single foreign language at or above the first semester of the second year of college-level coursework
  3. CASE Intensive Writing
  4. CASE Breadth of Inquiry, as modified below:
    1. Arts and Humanities:
      • Two courses designated as A&H
    2. Social and Historical Studies:
      • PSY-P 102
      • One addition course designated as S&H
    3. Natural and Mathematical Sciences:
      • Fulfilled by required major courses
  5. CASE Critical Approaches
  6. CASE Public Oral Communication

Students pursuing the B.S. in Speech and Hearing Sciences must also complete at least 36 credit hours in the Speech and Hearing Sciences courses, including the following requirements:

  1. Introductory Sequence. Complete both courses:
    • SPHS-S 106 Hearing Science: An Overview
    • SPHS-S 108 Speech and Language Sciences: An Overview
  2. Core courses. Complete all courses:
    • SPHS-S 111 Introduction to Phonetics for Speech and Hearing Sciences
    • SPHS-S 201 Speech Anatomy and Physiology
    • SPHS-S 302 Acoustics for Speech and Hearing Sciences
    • SPHS-S 307 Cognitive and Communicative Aspects of Aging
    • SPHS-S 311 Introduction to Research in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (PSY-P 211 may be substituted for S311 for students who also pursue a major in Psychology)
    • SPHS-S 333 Childhood Language
    • SPHS-S 350 Speech Science
    • SPHS-S 375 Hearing Science
  3. Advanced courses. Complete two (2) different courses selected from (Note: selecting a different topic of the same course will not fulfill this requirement):
    • SPHS-S 425 Topical Seminar in Speech Science
    • SPHS-S 427 Topical Seminar in Language Sciences
    • SPHS-S 429 Topical Seminar in Hearing Science
  4. Additional requirements. Complete the following requirements:
    1. PSY-P 101 Introductory Psychology I OR P155 Introduction to Psychological and Brain Sciences
    2. LING-L 203 Introduction to Linguistic Analysis
    3. STAT-S 303 Applied Statistical Methods for the Life Sciences OR PSY-K 300 Statistical Techniques
    4. 3 credit hours in biology or ANAT-A 215 Basic Human Anatomy OR PHSL-P 215 Basic Human Physiology
    5. 3 credit hours in physics or chemistry
    6. 6 additional credit hours in mathematics
    7. 6 additional credit hours in CASE N&M courses outside of Speech and Hearing Sciences

Students must also complete the B.S. degree requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences.
