Bachelor of Science in Health Systems Leadership—Information Systems
The Bachelor of Sciences in Health Sciences with a concentration in Health Systems Leadership—Information Systems (HSL—IS) is designed for students who want to become leaders in health systems. This track provides students with hands-on, applicable skills, as well as opportunities to develop their skills in the real world through internships in the healthcare field. Students majoring in Health Systems Leadership will be eligible for certification both as Certified Professional Coders and Certified Professional Billers, and can apply for a variety of jobs such as Medical and Health Service Managers, Medical Billing and Coding, Health Information Technician.
Courses will be offered in collaboration with Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).
Concentration Objectives
To be able to fulfill the requirements of a Bachelor Degree in Health Sciences with a concentration in Health Systems Leadership- Information Systems (HSL-IS) and promote the overall program goals, graduates of the Health Sciences degree at Indiana University South Bend will be able to:
- possess the entry-level skills for success in the rapidly changing health care environment
- document and decipher the electronic medial record
- process and submit medical billing and coding information
- obtain jobs in data analytics, coding and billing specialists, and HIM workflow processors
Academic Advising
College policy on advising requires that students meet with their academic advisors at least once each year, and in some departments, prior to each semester’s to enrollment. Advising holds are placed on all Vera Z. Dwyer College of Health Sciences students prior to advance registration and are released following advising appointments. Students receiving the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences with a concentration in Health System Leadership—Information System must complete 120 total credit hours including:
- IU South Bend Dwyer College of Health Sciences Campuswide General-Education Curriculum (33 cr.)
- Biomedical Sciences Requirements (18 cr.)
- Social Sciences Requirements (3 cr.)
- Major Requirements (66 cr.)
- A minimum of 30 credit hours at the 300- or 400-level.
- Courses required for the major must be completed with a grade of C or higher.
- A minimum CGPA of 2.0 is required.

Health Sciences Core (21 cr.)
The Health Sciences Core will begin with an Introduction to Health Sciences course during the first semester. This will be taken along with the General Education courses and introduce students to careers in Health Sciences. All Health Sciences students will take 21-33 credit hours of the Health Sciences core depending on the concentration. After the first two years of General Education, students will determine which of the three Health Sciences Concentrations they will complete. The following courses are required. Students should make an appointment with their advisor for additional degree requirements.
