Degree Programs

Master of Laws (LL.M.)

The LL.M. degree awarded by the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law is a single degree consisting of four tracks, allowing for curricular concentrations in the areas described. The School of Law does not award multiple LL.M. degrees with designated specialties. The four tracks offered within the LL.M. degree are:

  • American Law for Foreign Lawyers
  • Health Law Policy and Bioethics
  • Intellectual Property Law
  • International and Comparative Law
  • International Human Rights Law (Not accepting 2012 applications)
The Program
  • 24-credit Program with a wide range of elective courses (students may choose to take more than 24 credits, at the applicable tuition rate per credit hour, to satisfy bar admission requirements in some states).
  • Students have up to three (3) academic years to complete degree requirements and may opt for part-time and evening study schedules.
  • Per visa regulations, foreign students ordinarily graduate in two semesters.
  • Research component and Master's thesis worth 2-4 credits required (Optional for the American Law for Foreign Lawyers track).
  • Externship and optional practical training (OPT) opportunities.
  • Advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction if indicated by placement test at no cost.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Applicants must hold a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school in the U.S., or a first degree in law or comparable from a university outside of the U.S., or must be a foreign applicant licensed to practice outside the U.S.
  • Applicants for whom English is a second language must have a paper-based TOEFL score of at least 560, a computer-based TOEFL of at least 213, an internet-based iBT TOEFL of at least 81+, or an IELTS score of at least 6. We will also accept a score of "First Grade" on the national Japanese English Proficiency STEP Exam. Qualifying language scores must be less than two years old.
  • Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law will also accept successful completion of Intensive English Masters Level 112 at the ELS Language Centers as satisfaction of the English Language qualification.
  • A successful applicant must demonstrate academic achievement, professional accomplishment and English language competency.
Financial Aid and Scholarships

Extensive scholarship assistance is available to students with demonstrated financial need and outstanding academic/professional credentials, however, LL.M. Program does not offer full tuition waivers.
