Departmental Honors Program
Outstanding students in any of the departmental degree programs are urged to fulfill the requirements for an honors degree. Since independent research is an integral part of the Department of Biology honors program, students must enroll in at least two semesters of X490 Individual Study. (In some limited circumstances MSCI-M 450 and CHEM-X 399 may count in place of X490 credit.) The Undergraduate Advising Office should be consulted for other requirements, but in general, students completing coursework with a minimum grade point average of 3.300, a senior thesis, and at least 6 credit hours of BIOL X490 over a minimum of at least two semesters or a semester and one full summer will be awarded a degree with honors. Honors students are urged to enroll in special honors courses and seminars offered by many departments in the College of Arts and Sciences.
