Art + Design, School of

Introduction

The educational mission of the School of Art + Design at Indiana University is to help art, design, and merchandising students develop their creative skills; to provide them with an intellectual, historical, and critical background that will enable them to understand the functions and importance of art and design to contemporary society; to give students regardless of their specific aesthetic discipline an education across a range of art and design practices; and, through its program in merchandising, to help students take ideas from the imagination of the artist/designer to implementation in the marketplace. This mission includes a major international component, as the School continues to develop internships and other educational opportunities for its students around the globe.

The School of Art + Design was inaugurated in 2016, and the departments that formed it—the Department of Fine Arts Studio and the Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design, which also includes a degree in Fashion Design, and the IU Center for Art + Design in Columbus, IN—remain intact through the academic year 2016-2017. During this year, all courses in both departments will move into the School. For specific information about undergraduate and graduate degrees in these departments, please see their individual websites and that of the School of Art + Design.
