Master of Arts in Teaching / Special Education

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with a speciaization in Special Education in the School of Education is designed to prepare individuals seeking initial licensure in P-12 Mild Intervention for careers teaching children with disabilities in the public schools. This proposed program emphasizes the knowledge, dispositions, and skills required of special education teachers, and incorporates the performance standards of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). The program is designed to meet the licensure requirements of the state of Indiana, and has earned national recognition from CEC. The MAT program addresses the standards of the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC). The Master of Arts in teaching program is for individuals who have already earned a bachelor’s degree, but who are interested in becoming licensed as special education teachers in mild intervention (P-12). The program is designed with hybrid and online courses for working adults.

Candidates must take the appropriate state-required examinations when seeking licensure and should check with their advisors before registering for any examination.
