Freshman Drop Policy

University College students who have not attended a college or university after completing high school (FYU) and are in their first two semesters (excluding summer) in University College may not withdraw from more than one course per semester until they have earned 30 credit hours post-high school completion.

This policy excludes:

  • Course adjustments made during the first week of classes
  • Classes in which a student has been administratively withdrawn
  • Courses where the lecture and lab are separate courses, but require co-enrollment
  • Courses where a student is given permission from the faculty to drop back to enroll in a prerequisite course during that same term (e.g., math, world languages, chemistry, technology, engineering)
  • Request to withdraw from all courses

Students who earned college credit in high school through dual enrollment, AP, IB, etc. and have not attended another college or university prior to IUPUI enrollment fall under the guidelines of this policy.

This policy will be enforced through University College advisor and administrator approval on withdrawal requests. Documentation of extenuating circumstances will be required in order for a student to be considered for two or more withdrawals. If the withdrawal request is denied, the student may submit an appeal to the dean of University College.
