From the Founding Dean:

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the newest school at IUPUI, the School of Health & Human Sciences (SHHS). After eight months of talks between faculty and staff from Physical Education and Tourism Management (PETM) and the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) at IUPUI, the schools voted to combine and reorganize. With the approval of the IU Board of Trustees, a new School of Health & Human Sciences (SHHS) started operating effective July 1, 2018.

SHHS faculty and staff are very excited, and students think it’s a great idea—they feel it makes sense. The schools have collaborated for several years, and programs that complement one another are now housed within SHHS. The purpose of the alignment is to capitalize on existing synergies and school strengths. This is a lengthy process; faculty and staff continue to work tirelessly in the reorganization process to make sure there is a seamless transition for students.

SHHS brings together eight departments (Health Sciences, Kinesiology, Military Science, Nutrition & Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, and Tourism, Event & Sport Management), multiple institutes, outreach clinics, and research laboratories. SHHS will have over 1750 students, 80 faculty, and 40 staff, creating one of the largest schools at IUPUI. The new School of Health & Human Sciences will be known for the high-quality education it provides for its students. It will capitalize on its rich history and unique location in downtown Indianapolis to prepare future leaders who can translate theory into practice. SHHS strives to produce a supportive and diverse work environment for faculty and staff that leads to engaging and satisfying careers. The School’s unique combination of disciplines fosters innovative interdisciplinary research, high-impact learning opportunities, and civic engagement for enhancing the quality of life, health care, and economic development within local, national, and global communities.

Best Regards,

Rafael Bahamonde, Ph.D.
