A Distinctive Structure
A Foundation of Excellence
IUPUI has emerged as the state’s urban research and academic health sciences campus. It fills a vital role in understanding the city’s unique advantages and challenges, and works closely with civic leaders to develop strategies to help Indianapolis improve the quality of life for its citizens.
IUPUI’s focus on research in a wide range of fields has helped the campus and the community build a solid infrastructure in fields such as health science, in law, in higher education, in governance, and civic engagement and more, all through the ability to understand these fields, and to make informed decisions about what matters, where it matters, and how we can collectively shape our shared future.
A Community Commitment
In 1891, we made a commitment to offer courses in Indianapolis that would prepare our neighbors for a lifetime of success.
Later, we promised to provide educational opportunities that transform the lives of our students. And to grow along with the city that surrounds us, evolving to meet the needs of our changing community.
We are now Indiana's premier urban public research institution, offering degrees from both Indiana University and Purdue University right here in Indianapolis.
We are fulfilling the promises we made every day. Find out what Fulfilling The Promise means to IUPUI.
University College
Entering IUPUI students are granted admission to University College (either full admission or dual admission with a degree-granting school). Students remain in University College until they meet admission requirements for their fields of study. University College guides students in the development and implementation of meaningful pathways to student success. Students build a firm foundation for college and career success through many programs and services, including academic advising, academic support programs, career planning, peer mentoring, orientation, and scholar support.
The Schools
Fields of study or disciplines are housed in schools at IUPUI. School policies and procedures govern all the students within each school. Most fields of study are housed in departments within the schools, but in some schools they may be called by other names, such as divisions. The departments and schools themselves determine degree requirements and whether students are eligible to receive a degree. Students must be in a school and take a specific number of courses at IUPUI (residence requirements) to be eligible for a degree. A current list of degree programs appears online at www.iupui.edu/academic/schoolsdepts.htm.
