SPEA offers scholarships and fellowships to graduate students based on academic achievement, civic engagement, and financial need. Graduate assistantships are also available to full-time students.

Bingham Greenebaum Doll Scholarship
Deadline: September 15
The Bingham Greenebaum Doll Scholarship supports academically successful students who are interested in a future career in state government. To apply, you must be a SPEA undergraduate student, have completed 60 or more credit hours, and be in good academic standing. The recipient of this scholarship will also attend the Bingham Greenebaum Doll Legislative Conference and Luncheon in December.
C. Michael Pitts Scholarship
Deadline: March 1
This award was established in memory of C. Michael Pitts, who served as an associate professor for SPEA in labor relations and mediation for many years before his death in 2002. It is for IUPUI SPEA students seeking an MPA and who have an interest in pursuing a career in public service or the nonprofit sector. Applicants must have a 3.0 grade point average, be a resident of the state of Indiana, and demonstrate financial need.
Carl and Lisa Schoedel Scholarship
Deadline: March 1
Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to MPA students in good academic standing.
Greg Lindsey Academic Scholarship
Deadline: March 1
Established to honor former SPEA IUPUI Executive Associate Dean Greg Lindsey. The Greg Lindsey Academic Scholarship supports an undergraduate or graduate SPEA student. To apply, students must demonstrate financial need and have at least a 3.0 cumulative IU GPA.
Johnson Community Service Fellowship
Deadline: March 1
Awarded to an MPA student in SPEA. Recipients will have a minimum 3.0 GPA, demonstrated financial need, interest in pursuing a career in public service or not-for-profit sector, and is a current resident of the state of Indiana. Students must demonstrate their record of community service and complete an internship (approved by a SPEA faculty member) with a community nonprofit organization or governmental agency.
Lawrence M. Borst Fellowship
Award: $3,300 (fall semester) and $315/week (spring semester)
Deadline: March 1
This unique fellowship provides financial support for a talented SPEA graduate student to gain experience with the Indiana Senate, specifically in finance and budgetary analysis and programs. This one-year experience requires a commitment of 20 hours per week during the fall semester, with the student typically enrolled as a full-time graduate student. The approximate award for the fall semester is $3,300. The spring semester requires a full-time commitment, so the student may register in a practicum course but take no other classes. During the spring semester, the Borst Intern will be paid at the rate earned by other interns, approximately $350 per week. For more information on the fellowship contact Kathy Hursh
Peterson Fellows Program Scholarship

This unique fellowship provides financial support for a talented SPEA graduate student to gain experience with the City of Indianapolis Mayor's Office. Support for one graduate student annually in who is interested in a career in public service, has been selected for an internship with the City of Indianapolis's Mayor's Office, and is in good academic standing as determined by the Scholarship Committee. The Scholarship amount will be $15,000 over 3 semesters while recipient serves their internship. For more information on the fellowship contact Kathy Hursh.
Robert E. Martin Scholarship
Deadline: March 1
Scholarships will be awarded to a first or second year MPA graduate student in SPEA. This award is for students who have an interest in public management and/or financial management. Applicants must have a 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to residents of Indiana.
SPEA Alumni Association Scholarship
Deadline: March 1
The SPEA Alumni Association is proud to sponsor $1,000 scholarships for current SPEA students. The scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students who meet the qualifications. Current SPEA students returning for the next academic year with a 3.0 GPA or higher are eligible to apply.
SPEA Dean's Council Scholarships
Deadline: March 1
The SPEA Dean's Council is proud to sponsor scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 for current SPEA IUPUI students. The scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students based upon major.
SPEA International Experience Scholarship
Award: $500–$1,000
Deadline: March 1
The SPEA International Experience Scholarship offers the opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students who are participating in a SPEA abroad program to share their experiences in a variety of creative ways, such as leading the Passport program or documenting international experiences on Instagram over the course of a week. Application must be submitted to via this application link by March 1.
Tom and Pat DeCoster Scholarship
Deadline: March 1
Award of support for a first or second year graduate student in SPEA. Student may be attending full or part time. To be eligible, a student must be a single parent and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
World Police and Fire Games Scholarship
Deadline: March 1
Current full-time and retired police officers and firefighters in the state of Indiana are eligible to receive money to support undergraduate or graduate coursework at IUPUI. Scholarships range from $500–1,000 annually.

Graduate Student Assistantships
SPEA hires dozens of graduate students to work with our faculty members in a research capacity every academic year. Graduate Assistants work 20 hours per week and receive full tuition, most fees, student health insurance, and a stipend of $9,000 that is paid out monthly over the academic year. Student Research Assistants work up to 20 hours per week and receive a competitive hourly rate roughly equivalent to $10,000 per academic year. Both positions are competitively awarded.
