Research Centers and Programs
IU McKinney’s research centers and programs make significant contributions to the legal profession and the community, locally, nationally, and internationally, enhancing a diverse and demanding curriculum with opportunities for research and hands-on experience.
The law school's William S. and Christine S. Hall Center for Law and Health is at the forefront of health law education. The center is repeatedly ranked as one of the top health law programs in the country, offering interdisciplinary opportunities for students and serving as an information resource on health care issues for the legal and medical communities. Students can earn a Certificate in Health Law and participate in the Indiana Health Law Review.
The Center for International and Comparative Law is the nucleus for all of the law school’s international law programs, including our LL.M. programs, summer study abroad programs, and other international activities and externships.
Each year the center sponsors a variety of programs, including hosting speakers of international renown, and sponsoring students in international moot court competitions.
Foreign study programs include:
- The Program in International Human Rights Law, which is designed to promote legal study and scholarship in international human rights and to facilitate the placement of students as legal interns at international human rights organizations in this country and overseas. Since 1997, the program has coordinated 170 student placements in 55 countries. The center has Special Consultative Status with the United Nations and students participate in an extensive Shadow Report Program with the U.N.
- The Joint Center for Asian Law Studies is a collaboration between IU McKinney and Renmin University of China School of Law—the top law school in China. The Joint Center offers the Cinese Law Summer Program, the annual International Law Student Forum, and the Annual Sino-U.S. Law Conference, all in Beijing. It also sponsors the Summer Program in U.S. Law which welcomes Chinese students and professors from Sun Yat-sen University Law School.
The Center for Intellectual Property Law and Innovation was established in 2004 as a resource for education and research in intellectual property law-particularly as it applies to the life sciences. The center is designed to produce graduates in law with a strong knowledge of intellectual property law, a solid foundation in business development, and sound transactional skills in all matters relating to intellectual property law.
The Program on Law and State Government enhances the ties between the academic community and state government offices, providing a means of exchange of ideas on issues facing state governments, as well as creating opportunities for internships for students with more than 50 government offices in Indiana.
The Environmental, Energy and Natural Resources Law Program (ENR) offers a path to expertise in a growing area of legal practice that addresses comlex issues of resource development and conservation, energy and transportation policy, environmental justice, and other related subjects. Students interested in becoming an environmental or a natural resources lawyer should investigate the ENR Certificate, which can help demonstrate to employers the student’s grasp of complex issues in the field.
The Global Crisis Leadership Forum is a joint initiative of the McKinney School of Law and IU’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs. This unique interdisciplinary partnership brings together experts and practitioners in the field of global crisis management. The forum organizes workshops, forum discussions, and training programs that enhance individual and institutional resiliency to both man-made and natural crises and disasters.
