Certificate Programs
Medical Coding
The Medical Coding Certificate is designed for people interested in the medical coding profession as well as students pursuing a bachelor's degree in another field of study who may wish to enhance their primary degree program.
Upon completion of the Medical Coding Certificate, students are prepared to find employment in a hospital or physician's office. They will be eligible for Certified Coding Associate (CCA) credential offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
Certificate Requirements
The student must be admitted to the IUPUI campus.
Students must complete the prerequisite course requirements with a minimum grade of C for each class and must also earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 before they will be permitted to begin the core courses of the coding certificate. The following courses constitute the prerequisite requirements:
- Anatomy
- Physiology
- Information Technology

There are 28 credit hours of core coursework required for completion. The following courses constitute the certificate:
- Medical Terminology
- Medical Science I
- Medical Science II
- Healthcare Requirements and Standards
- ICD Coding
- ICD Coding Lab
- CPT Coding
- CPT Coding Lab
- Healthcare Reimbursement Systems
- Release of Information
- Professional Practicum in Medical Coding
Students are required to receive a minimum grade of C in each course and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
