Online course credit limits by program modality

Purpose

To ensure that students enrolled in in-person and hybrid programs at Indiana University Kokomo are enrolled in sufficient numbers of in-person courses as required by the Higher Learning Commission.

Scope

All students first enrolled in a hybrid or in-person degree or certificate program beginning Fall 2021.

Definitions

Online Course: For the purpose of this policy, any Indiana University course where distance education (including online education), whether synchronous or asynchronous, comprises more than 75% of course delivery for that course. This includes online all (OA), online interactive (OI), videoconference (DO) and hybrid – distance video (HD) modes. Hybrid – Traditional (HY) courses are not considered online courses.

Policy

  1. In order to be awarded a degree or certificate, all students must complete no more than the approved proportion of their programs in an online format.
    1. Students enrolled in in-person programs shall complete no more than 45% of their program requirements through online courses as defined above.
    2. Students enrolled in hybrid programs shall complete no more than 75% of their program requirements through online courses as defined above.
  1. Programs may have more stringent requirements regarding modalities of instruction consistent with extant IU and IU Kokomo policies.
  2. For the purpose of this policy,
    1. Courses not required to complete all program requirements shall not be included in calculating the proportion of courses completed through online courses.
    2. On account of the effects of the COVID pandemic on instructional modalities, course credit earned between Summer 2020 and Summer 2021 (inclusive) shall not be counted as online courses irrespective of course modality.
