Associate of Science in Radiography

Radiography is the science of using radiation to provide images of the tissues, organs, bones, and vessels that comprise the human body. While radiologists are physicians who have been specially trained in interpreting diagnostic images, the radiographer is responsible for producing diagnostic images of the patient that radiologists use to diagnose patient conditions. Treatment of patients depends on the accurate and precise production of radiographic images. Their principal duties consist of producing diagnostic radiographs and performing patient care assessments. They also assist in fluoroscopic examinations and in interventional radiological procedures. Specific tasks performed by radiographers vary. Radiographers must be able to care for seriously ill and injured patients to optimism information without injury to the patient and with the least amount of pain and discomfort from the examination. Utilizing knowledge of methods to reduce ionizing radiation during the procedures is of primary importance. Radiographers assist the radiologist in some complex procedures, often involving the injection of opaque media through needles or catheters. Radiographers must be well educated and experienced in aseptic techniques, requiring skills often comparable to those of nurses. Radiographers make up the largest group of imaging professionals. Most radiographers are employed in hospitals, clinics, and physicians’ offices. Graduates receive an Associate of Science degree and are eligible to take the national certification examination of The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) to become certified as a Registered Radiographer R.T.  The Associate of Science Degree in Radiography at Indiana University Kokomo is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

IUK Associate of Science in Radiography Application Process 

  1. Apply to and be accepted to Indiana University Kokomo as a degree seeking student.
    1. Students currently attending or previously enrolled at Indiana University (any campus) are not required to submit a copy of their IU transcript. However, transcripts from all other colleges, universities, or other training institutions are required; even if the credits are already posted to the IU transcript. 
    2. Photocopies, unofficial copies, faxed copies, or student copies of the applicant’s transcript are accepted.
    3. The program admissions committee does reserve the right to request an official copy. Submission of illegible copies will delay the review of the application. Transcripts must be submitted even if the courses taken are not considered prerequisites. 
  1. Apply to the Associate of Science in Radiography: (the selection process is competitive)
    1. Applications are due by December 1 of the year prior to program admission.
    2. Meet with an academic advisor prior to submitting an application for the Radiography program.
    3. A prerequisite completion plan is required for students who have not completed all program prerequisites.
    4. Complete Job Shadow requirements. A minimum of 16 hours of observation should be completed between January 1 and December 1 of the year of application.
    5. Complete the required essay questions in a Word document. A minimum of 500 words is necessary for this section of the application, not including the underlined portion of the questions.
    6. Applicants should expect official response confirming receipt of the application within three weeks of the date that the application is received. When applicable, verification will be sent via email to the address provided on the application.

Selection Process for the ASN in Radiography: 

Preference will be given to Indiana state residents: Preference is given to applicants who are Indiana residents and to applicants who complete the majority of applicable course work at a public college or university in Indiana. Each program’s admissions committee determines how the preference policy shall be weighted in their admissions policies.

  • Grade Point Average: GPAs earned at an IU campus will be used to calculate GPA (minimum 2.5 GPA is necessary for consideration as a program candidate). For transfer credit, please see an admission or academic advisor to determine which non-IU courses will transfer.  Transfer credits may satisfy prerequisite requirements; however, GPA does not transfer. (20 points max)
  • GPA in Math and Science: Only IU Math/Science course work GPAs will be considered (minimum of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is necessary for possible program admission). For transfer credit, please see an admission or academic advisor to determine which non-IU courses will transfer. Transfer credits may satisfy prerequisite requirements; however, GPA does not transfer. (10 points max)
  • All six (6) prerequisites must be taken prior to entering the core courses of the program. If a student is selected to the program and fails to meet all pre-qualifying prerequisites, they will be rescinded from the program. Students earning a "C" or higher in prerequisite courses taken at IU Kokomo earn two (2) points for each prerequisite course. (12 points max/ 2 points each). Students taking and passing prerequisite courses at any other institution will earn one (1) point per course for a maximum of six (6) points. Students mixing courses at IU Kokomo and other transferable institutions will earn at the rate of two (2) points for IU Kokomo prerequisites and one (1) point at other transferable institutions.
  • Submission of Job Shadow Observation report and verification (0.5 point each- 1 max). Job Shadow forms can be delivered to Hunt Hall, Room SM-106 during the week (Monday through Friday) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Re-applying? Re-applicants are required to resubmit the Radiography Application and Job Shadowing Form.
  • Interview with the Program’s Admission Committee. Failure to attend the interview, without medical documentation, may disqualify the applicant for admission during that admission year.
  • Credit hours completed at university/college at grade “C” or higher
    1. (1 point each 15 hours/ 4 points max);
    2. 15-29 credit hours = 1 point
    3. 30-44 credit hours = 2 points
    4. 24-59 credit hours = 3 points
    5. 60+ credit hours    = 4 point
    6. Documented experience in health care setting (1 point max)
    7. Applicants re-applying for admission (2 points max/ 1 for 2 times)

Maximum total points: 56

In the event of a tie, the candidate with the greatest number of courses taken at IUK, at a grade of “C” or above will be given preference.

Curriculum and Degree Requirements 

To graduate with an Associate of Science degree in Radiography, the student must:

  • Successfully complete all prerequisites with a grade of “C” or above
  • Complete all courses in Radiography core curriculum with a grade of “C” or above
  • Complete all clinical requirements and competencies
  • Meet attendance requirements
  • Satisfy all financial obligations to the University including returning dosimeter badge
  • Have a minimum of a 20. Cumulative GPA for all attempted courses
  • The Program Director will determine final graduation status

Credentialing Eligibility Requirements 

All degree requirements must be met before qualified faculty can verify the graduate’s national certification application.
