Minor in Arabic and Islamic Studies
Arabic and Islamic Studies at Indiana University Indianapolis is a community-engaged program that connects students to the cultures of Arab Americans in the greater Indianapolis area and the approximately 400 million people who speak Arabic on a daily basis in the Middle East and North Africa. The program emphasizes the impact of a language that is also sacred to 1.8 billion Muslims around the world, including in Indianapolis. The minor focuses on the cultural aspects of both Arabic and Islam, from contributions to world literatures, art and architecture, and food to social life and politics. Students are encouraged to develop meaningful ties to local Arab and Muslim communities; engage in extra-curricular activities on campus; and participate in faculty-directed research. Understanding the significance of Middle Eastern and North African as well as Muslim cultures will benefit all students, no matter what their chosen field.
