Doctoral Students
Doctoral Advisory Committee
No later than one year after enrollment into the PhD Program, the student shall nominate an Advisory Committee to approve the student’s program of study (Course Prescription) and counsel the student until the passing of the doctoral qualifying examination.
The advisory committee must include:
- At least two (2) members from the major area
- One (1) member from an area outside the major (typically from the student’s minor department)
- At least two (2) of the above members must be members of the graduate faculty
- If the committee has co-chairpersons, at least one must be from the major area

The names of faculty members nominated to serve on the advisory committee shall be forwarded to the Degree Administration office for approval no later than one year after the student has been admitted to the Ph.D. program.
- Students are required to begin this process by using the SPH Electronic Course Prescription environment, which is found here: https://sph.indiana.edu/ECRx/ - student will select the “Student Login” link to begin the form process
This step must be completed before any coursework is transferred or the course prescription drafted.
The typical committee structure at SPH-B looks like this:

- 2 members from the major area that consist of:
- The Advisory Committee Chair, who is the student’s advisor
- Optional Co-Chair who will also serve in an advising capacity, OR a major representative
- 2 members from the major area that consist of:
- One (1) representative from the student’s minor
