Doctoral Students

Course Prescription Requirements

Course Prescription:

The courses required for a doctoral degree are individually prescribed for each student following approval of the members of the student's advisory committee. The student and the advisory committee work together to prescribe the required research skill courses, major courses, minor courses, elective courses, and the appropriate number of dissertation credits. This prescription of required courses may be finalized and approved during a formal course prescription meeting attended by the student and the members of the student's advisory committee.

To request a course prescription meeting, first finalize the day and time with all members of your committee.  Meetings may happen in person or virtually using Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

If you choose to have the Course Prescription meeting in person, please fill out this form a minimum of 10 working days before the planned meeting date so the Graduate Recorder can reserve a room: https://sph.indiana.edu/forms/student/graduate-student-meeting/index.php

If you choose to have the Course Prescription meeting virtually (on Zoom or Microsoft Teams), you are responsible for creating a Zoom or Teams meeting and distributing the meeting information to your committee.  Once you have completed the meeting and your committee approves your coursework plan, please initiate the Online Course Prescription form (see below).

The Course Prescription Form is housed online in the SPH-B E-Course Prescription Environment, located here: https://sph.indiana.edu/ECRx/ - student will select the “Student Login” link to begin the form process.  This is linked to the Advisory Committee and Transfer Credits form within the same online environment so all can be referenced as needed by the student.

The form is first approved by the Advisory Committee Chair, then each committee member, then the Graduate Recorder, and finally the Assistant Dean of Graduate Education.

A doctoral student's course prescription consists of a minimum of 90 credits, including research skills, major area of study, minor area of study, elective, and dissertation credits. The distribution of credits in these areas is normally as follows:

  • Research skill courses (minimum 9 credits)
  • Major courses (minimum 30 credits)
  • Minor courses (minimum 9 credits)
  • Elective courses (0–28 credits)
  • Dissertation credits (20–30 credits)

The 90 credits for the Ph.D. degree also includes coursework that is considered to be prerequisite or required coursework. These requirements are described in the section of the bulletin entitled Major, Minor, and Dissertation Course Requirements.

The form can and should be updated if a change in any courses is needed at any time.  Please notify the Graduate Recorder (Amy Shamanov at aloop@iu.edu) with requests for changes.  Please indicate which section of the course prescription, and which specific courses, are being modified.
