Language Study Option Rules for Completing the World Languages and Cultures Requirement

A student who wishes to complete the world languages and cultures requirement through language study (LS) must achieve proficiency in a single foreign language equal to successful completion of two courses at the second-year level or higher.  The required proficiency may be presented in two ways.

• Students may complete the typical four-semester sequence of a single foreign language to complete the world languages and cultures requirement.
• Students who wish to continue study of a foreign language begun elsewhere must take a foreign language placement test. Students who place beyond the first semester of a language sequence may fulfill the world languages and cultures requirement through completion of the remaining courses in the language sequence, including the fourth semester-level course, or a third year level course.

Completion of high school foreign language courses will not be accepted as a basis for exemption. Students with high school foreign language training must take a language placement test to determine proficiency-level. International students whose native language is not English may fulfill the world languages and cultures requirement through demonstrated proficiency in their native languages.
