Major in Portuguese
Purpose
The B.A. Major in Portuguese offers students an in-depth encounter with the rich and diverse realm of Portuguese, Brazilian and Lusophone African literature and culture, while focusing on the study of the Portuguese language. Students can explore topics such as race, ethnicity, national cinemas, and women's writing. The study of language, literature, and culture gives special emphasis to issues of historical and political importance that cut across geographic boundaries in the Portuguese-speaking world.
Requirements
Students must complete the following:
- 30 credit hours in courses beyond P100-P150.
- A minimum of 6 credit hours at the 200 level. (P200 and P250 are required.)
- 6 credit hours at the 300 level. (P311 and P317 are required.)
- A minimum of 12 credit hours must be at the 400 level, including at least 6 credit hours in literature.
- A maximum of 6 credit hours of coursework taught in English may count toward the Portuguese major. These courses include P290, P410, P411, P412, and P420. Other courses taught in English require departmental approval prior to enrollment in the course in order to count toward the major.
- At least 18 credit hours of the major must be completed on the Bloomington campus.
- 400-level literature courses are P400, P401, P405, P415, P467, P470, P475, P476, X492, and P495.
- Native speakers of Portuguese are expected to complete the major with coursework at the 300 and 400 level.
Students must complete the degree requirements for the B.A. degree in the College of Arts and Sciences.
