Bachelor of Science in Health Care Systems Leadership

The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences is a versatile degree that provides students with extensive preparation for work in any field that addresses people’s health. The objective of this program is to address the needs of those students seeking a broad understanding of the science of human health and its application to their chosen career. It will be housed in the Vera Z. Dwyer College of Health Sciences, School of Applied Health Science at Indiana University South Bend. The degree will be delivered via traditional classroom format, include internships with local health agencies, and culminate in a capstone experience. All students entering the Vera Z. Dwyer College of Health Sciences will be automatically enrolled in the B.S. in Health Sciences program. Students will progress towards degree completion unless they apply and are formally admitted to one of the professional/prelicensure programs, such as Nursing, Dental Hygiene and/or Radiography/Medical Imaging.


Health Systems Leadership Concentration Objectives

To be able to fulfill the requirements of a Bachelor Degree in Health Sciences with a concentration in health systems leadership and promote the overall program goals, graduates of the Health Sciences degree at Indiana University South Bend will be able to:

  • Integrate value based leadership in professional practice
  • Evaluate effective leadership competencies in diverse practice settings
  • Utilize diverse strategies to assess organizational effectiveness

In addition to the health systems leadership concentration objectives, students who are in the Health Care Systems Leadership, Billing and Coding and Logistics and Informatics tracks will be able to:

  • Evaluate health data management systems
  • Manage communication between health care providers, patients, third party payers, and administrators

Academic Advising

College policy on advising requires that students meet with their academic advisors at least once each year, and in some departments, prior to each semester’s to enrollment. Advising holds are placed on all [name of college/school] students prior to advance registration and are released following advising appointments. Degree Requirements (120 cr.)

Students receiving the Bachelor of Science in Health Care Systsems Leadership degree must complete 120 total credit hours including:


  • A minimum of 30 credit hours at the 300- or 400-level.
  • Courses required for the major must be completed with a grade of C or higher. A minimum CGPA of 2.0 is required.

Health Sciences Core (33 cr.)

NOTE | As of November 2015, not all courses are authorized to be taught at IU South Bend

The Health Sciences Core will begin with Introduction to Health Sciences during the first semester. This will be taken along with the General Education courses and introduce students to careers in Health Sciences. All Health Sciences students will take the 33 credit hours of the Health Sciences Core over the four years of study. After the first two years of General Education, students will determine which of the three Health Sciences Concentrations they will complete. Each of the concentrations are offered as minors and post-degree certificates (courses are indicated with an asterisk (*).

Health Care Systems Leadership Concentration Core (21 cr.)

Students selecting the Health Care Systems Leadership Concentration will take 21 credit hours of core courses and then decide which of the two tracks within the concentration they would like to pursue: the Health Care Information Systems track or the Health Care Data track. Health Care Systems Leadership is also available for all students as a minor or post-degree certificate.

Health Care Information Systems Track (9 cr.)

Students interested in the Information Systems track will take courses outside the Vera Z. Dwyer College of Health Sciences in the Health Information Administrative program at IUPUI. These courses are online and open to all students. There are no electives in this track due to the course progression and credit hour limit.
