General Information
It is important to recognize that it costs considerably more to provide a quality medical education than what the student actually pays in tuition and fees. Every student attending the Indiana University School of Medicine benefits from the subsidies provided by the state of Indiana through state-legislated appropriations. These funds enable Indiana University to keep tuition and fees at the lowest reasonable amount possible. In addition, Indiana University benefits through its many generous friends and supportive organizations that assist in making a medical education affordable to all School of Medicine students.
The purpose of the School of Medicine's scholarship and financial aid programs is to assist students whose personal and family resources are not sufficient to meet the total cost of their medical education. In order to meet the financial needs of our students in a fair and equitable manner through the most desirable aid programs possible, most financial aid programs are made available to students with documented financial need. Because of the limited resources in the desirable aid programs, the school cannot assure that it will be able to fully meet each student's financial need, and therefore, some students will need to investigate other options in meeting their educational expenses.
Student eligibility for financial aid programs is determined by evaluating both the student's and the parents' ability to defray the cost of a medical education. To apply for some aid programs, regardless of the independent status of the student, students must complete the entire Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit it to the federal processor. Within four weeks after the FAFSA is sent, the results of the needs analysis will be electronically transmitted to the IUPUI Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA). Beginning in May or June the OSFA staff will notify the student of his or her eligibility for all federal aid programs. Keep in mind that all financial information received is held in strict confidence and is used only to determine the student's eligibility for financial assistance.
Every January, the Dean's Medical Student Affairs-Student Financial Services (MSA-SFS) office distributes and makes available, via the MSA Web page, the IU Financial Aid Guide for Medical Students. In addition, the financial aid application materials are distributed to all accepted medical students. The materials are also distributed to current first-, second-, and third-year students. The IU Financial Aid Guide for Medical Students provides information about the institutional and federal funding options available for medical students. Students are encouraged to investigate other sources of aid that may be available through bank trusts, churches, and fraternal and professional organizations.

Scholarship Information
The School of Medicine Scholarship and Loan Committee awards students more than three-quarters of a million dollars in scholarships and fellowships from annual gifts and endowments. The scholarship awards range from $500 to full tuition. While some programs have donor restrictions, the School of Medicine maintains a philosophy of equal opportunity. All students who complete the school's Application for Financial Assistance will be considered for all of the School of Medicine scholarships and fellowships listed in this bulletin.
While most scholarships are awarded for a combination of financial need and academic achievement, some scholarships are based strictly on academic achievement and some based strictly on financial need. To receive need-based awards, students must first apply for federal aid and submit parental information (regardless of independent status) on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Parental information is a factor in granting scholarships based on need or a combination of need and academics. Academic awards honor outstanding medical school achievement: very few scholarships are granted to incoming first-year students.
Medical students receiving the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarships (AFHPSP) or the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) will not be considered for scholarships based on need or a combination of need and academics.
Eligibility for and renewability of scholarship assistance has been outlined by the committee in the following policy statement:
The receipt of any academic or combined need and academic scholarship by a student is contingent upon: (1) the student applying when required, (2) the criteria of the scholarship award, and (3) the student maintaining good academic standing. A student is in good academic standing, as seen by the Scholarship Committee, when the student is not on academic probation for any reason during the entire preceding academic year. The Indiana University School of Medicine Student Manual defines what constitutes good academic standing.
In addition, renewability will be contingent upon the student having demonstrated financial need and the availability of funds.

The Aline Mary Aust Condict and Charles H. Aust Sr., M.D., Scholarship
Established in December 1998 in memory of Aline Mary Aust Condict and Charles H. Aust Sr., M.D. Aline was deeply religious, kind, a supportive family member, and a wonderful sister, aunt, and mother. She was a great source of strength and solace to her brother Charles throughout his life and particularly during his struggle with lymphoma, prior to his death. Dr. Charles Aust Sr. was born the youngest child to a large farm family near Boonville, Indiana. When he was four years old he experienced a severe illness that nearly took his life. He recovered after visits from the local doctor, who he remembered had a "long white beard." From that time on, it was his goal to become a physician. Dr. Aust did his undergraduate work at Evansville College and Indiana University Bloomington. After receiving his M.D. in 1953, he spent four years in general practice in Terre Haute. He then did a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis. Subsequently, he relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he was a pathologist at Lutheran Hospital for almost 30 years; he was active in the Fort Wayne Medical Society and served a term as president. He was a longtime delegate to the Indiana State Medical Association in Indianapolis and served on numerous committees. He testified for the medical profession before the Indiana General Assembly. He was dedicated to the community and served on the board of Southwest Allen County Schools and was deputy coroner in Allen County. He was a director of the teaching program for medical technologists at Lutheran Hospital, and was very good at explaining disease processes to his non-pathologist colleagues. He loved a good story, and was often found at the old Lutheran Hospital, telling or listening to some humorous medical anecdote. Dr. Aust Sr. and his colleagues started a summer internship for medical students in pathology laboratory, and he enjoyed teaching younger physicians in training. He is remembered as a good pathologist and teacher, an effective medical politician, and a strong supporter of the IU School of Medicine and the medical profession. Physicians knew him as a good friend to everyone, especially his colleagues.
Special consideration will be given to students of rural background or who attended the University of Evansville. Further, students should first be chosen from those who reside in or whose families reside in Warrick, Vigo, or Allen counties and their respective contiguous Indiana counties. Students must also be attending the Evansville Center for Medical Education during their first two years of medical school.
