Minor in Arabic Culture and Public Health

The minor in Arabic Culture and Public Health connects the study of the Arabic Language and Culture with Public Health Study in an empirical approach to serve the Indiana population of Arab immigrants and refugees as well as to build bridges with Arab countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The minor has an interdisciplinary approach to establish new critical paradigms. The minor can also be a first academic step for students in the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program allowing them to get an internship working in Hassan 1st University in Morocco. Students complete 12/14 credits from the required courses list in Arabic language and culture along with Public Health courses, in addition to 3-credit course chosen from the elective courses list to complete the 15-17 credits required for the minor.

minor in Arabic Culture and Public Health (NELC & PBHL) requires satisfactory completion of the following requirements:

  • completion of properly distributed credit hour requirements for the baccalaureate degree in effect when the student was admitted to their home school, 
  • completion of 15-17 credit hours, with a minimum grade of C in each course, and none of those may "double count"
  • 6 credits must be completed at IUPUI, 
  • to declare the minor, complete the School of Liberal Arts online declaration form: https://liberalarts.iupui.edu/admissions/update-major-form.html   

Minor Requirements:

Language courses (6-8 credits) at IUPUI:  

  • NELC-A 131: Beginning Arabic I and NELC-A 132: Beginning Arabic II (8 credits) 

OR 

6 credits from:

  • NELC-A 200: Intermediate Arabic I (3 cr.)
  • NELC-A 250: Intermediate Arabic II (3 cr.)
  • NELC-A 300: Advanced Arabic I (3 cr.)
  • NELC-A 350: Advanced Arabic II (3 cr.)  

In addition, students must complete one three-credit course in Arabic Culture (3 credits) 

  • NELC-N 397: Peoples & Cultures of the Middle East (3 cr.)  
  • NELC-A 360: Women and Islam (3 cr.)

Students are also required to complete one three-credit course in Public Health (3 credits):

  • PBHL-S 460: Biosocial Approach to Global Health (3 cr.)

Elective (3 credits) 

  • REL-R 257: Intro to Islam (3 cr.)
  • PBHL-S 120: Intro to Community Health (3 cr.) 
  • PBHL-S 335: Health Equity & Social Determinants of Health (3 cr.)
