This IU Online Undergraduate Certificate in Human Communication in a Mediated World is a response to the growing necessity for humans to learn to interact more effectively in a world where people frequently move in and out of traditional face-to-faceand mediated communication situations. Our face-to-face communication is altered because of our mediated experiences, which are now an integral part of our society.
As a student in this program, you acquire the ability to understand and apply traditional and mediated communication theories appropriately and effectively in organizational, intercultural, interpersonal, persuasive, and mass-media communication contexts. In addition, you acquire the skills to examine, understand, and apply appropriate communication tools, processes, and strategies in computer-mediated environments.
Your IU Online Undergraduate Certificate in Human Communication in a Mediated World prepares you to work in business, government, education, the arts, and performance in such careersascommunications specialist, direct sales representative, administration support specialist,account manager, retail manager, human resource associate, or recruiting specialist.
Admission to the Certificate program in Human Communication in a Mediated World (COMM) requires the following:
- a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0
- to declare the certificate, complete the School of Liberal Arts online declaration form: https://liberalarts.iupui.edu/admissions/update-major-form.html
Students who have not enrolled at IUPUI may be considered for this certificate if they meet the above criteria and apply for Undergraduate Admission to IUPUI and specify the Undergraduate Human Communication in a Mediated World Certificate as their objective.
The certificate is NOT available to Communication Studies majors.
The Certificate program in Human Communication in a Mediated World (COMM) requires satisfactory completion of the following:
- Only online courses offered by the Department of Communication Studies at IUPUI count towards the certificate.
- Each course must be completed with a minimum grade of C.
- Successful completion of a total of 18 credit hours of courses, including:
- COMM-C316: Human Communication in a Digital Age (3 cr.)
- Five elective courses (15 cr.) selected in consultation with the certificate director from the following list:
- COMM-C 108: Listening (3 cr.)
- COMM-C 180: Introduction to Interpersonal Communication (3 cr.)
- COMM-C 223: Business and Professional Communication (3 cr.)
