Medical Sociology
Considering the unique resources and needs of IUPUI, the Department of Sociology offers a minor in medical sociology. This program is designed to lead to a general understanding of the social context of health, health care, and the delivery of medical services and should be of special interest to all students majoring in health-related specialties.
Requirements
The minor requires 15 credit hours of course work (6 of which must be completed at IUPUI), with a grade of C (2.0) or higher:
  • SOC R100 Introduction to Sociology (3 cr.)
One course selected from the following:
  • SOC R381 Social Factors in Health and Illness (3 cr.) or SOC R382 Social Organization of Health Care (3 cr.)
  • 9 additional credit hours of sociology courses selected from the following:
    • SOC R320 Sexuality and Society
    • SOC R321 Women and Health
    • SOC R327 Sociology of Death and Dying
    • SOC R349 Victimology
    • SOC R381 (if R382 was taken above)
    • SOC R382 (if R381 was taken above)
    • SOC R385 AIDS and Society
    • SOC R410 Alcohol, Drugs, and Society
    • SOC R415 Sociology of Disability
    • SOC R485 Sociology of Mental Illness
    • SOC R495 Topics in Medical Sociology
    • Additional Sociology electives to total 15 credit hours of electives
