R.N. to Master's Mobility Option

Registered nurses who wish to pursue graduate education and whose highest academic credential in nursing is a diploma or an associate degree and who have a baccalaureate or higher degree in another field may be interested in exploring this educational option. This mobility option allows eligible registered nurses to earn a master's degree in nursing without the conferral of the baccalaureate degree in nursing. Interested students should contact the Office of Nursing Student Services on the Northwest Campus for more information. This option may not be the best mobility option for many registered nurses, so it is important to talk with the coordinator of Nursing Student Services early in the decision-making process.

Master of Science in Nursing

Students who are preparing for advanced nursing practice, clinical specialization, or administration are admitted to one of 11 majors (women's health, perinatal nursing, children at risk, pediatric nurse practitioner, primary health care (adult practitioner), adult psychiatric/mental health, child/adolescent psychiatric/mental health, community-based nursing, community home health care, nursing administration, and nursing of adults). The respective majors require 42 credit hours, 12 of which belong to the core curriculum. The core curriculum consists of courses in policy and practice perspectives, advanced practice role, research methods, theory, and nursing issues that are available on the Northwest campus via the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System (IHETS). Most majors require completion of core courses before proceeding to courses in the major. Students must also complete either a study or a thesis and may select faculty from any of the eight campuses as thesis/study advisors.

Availability of Graduate Courses

All nursing courses taught over IHETS are available at the Northwest campus.

Doctoral Program

Students preparing for scholarly research in nursing are admitted to this program. Students may enter the program with baccalaureate or master's degree preparation. If admitted postbaccalaureate, students must take 30 credit hours at the master's level and 60 at the doctoral level.
