Bachelor of Science in Informatics – Collaborative Online Degree Program

As technology becomes increasingly prevalent in our lives, there's a growing need for skills in managing the digital world, and in understanding the social impact of computing and the big picture of how people and technology connects. Informatics focuses on putting information technology to work solving today's problems in healthcare, privacy, security, education, poverty, and the environment.

IU Online’s Bachelor of Science in Informatics prepares you to harness the power of computing to bring about  positive change and address challenges in such areas as business, security, privacy, healthcare, education, poverty, and environmental sustainability. Adopting tools and techniques from communication, mathematics, multimedia, and human-computer interaction design, you learn interdisciplinary approaches to transforming data into knowledge that creates real-world innovations.

Students may choose one of the following tracks:

  • Business track - Coursework will provide instruction in several areas of business and business management, including accounting, bookkeeping, marketing, human resource management, financial management, and supply chain management.
  • Enterprise resource planning (ERP) track - Students will study several skill areas within business ERP, including financial accounting, information systems, marketing, operation management, supply chain, and ERP.
  • Health information management track Coursework will provide instruction in several areas of health information management, including ethics, communication, confidentiality, and data analysis. Students will learn to follow standards of a professional healthcare environment, and to effectively and accurately analyze healthcare information.
  • Legal informatics trackStudents will study several skill areas necessary in legal informatics, including specialized technology, handling evidence, information governance, security, privacy, and protection of intellectual property. Students will assist with presenting a legal case in court. 
  • Sustainability track Students will study several skill areas within sustainability studies, including environment, society and economy, natural science and social science principles of sustainability, and their application to innovative problem solving, and application of sustainability to work and career choices.

Degree Requirements  

To graduate with the BS in Informatics students must complete a total of 120 credit hours, including the general education and college/school requirements of the home campus, and the following courses in informatics.
