Master of Health Administration–Doctor of Jurisprudence (M.H.A.-J.D.)
This course of study addresses the health services’ need for professionals who understand the legal and administrative frameworks necessary to function successfully as health lawyers or health services administrators.
Individuals must independently apply and be accepted into both the School of Public Health MHA program and the McKinney School of Law JD program. Once students have been accepted into this joint degree program, they should meet with their academic advisors to plan the course sequencing. The program includes 39 credit hours in PBHL courses, and 82 credit hours in law courses.
Undergraduate prerequisites
Prerequisites do not need to be completed prior to submission of application.
Required undergraduate prerequisite courses include:
- An undergraduate microeconomics course with a grade of “C” or better (e.g. ECON-E 201: Microeconomics) or the MHA Microeconomics primer course must be successfully completed before you will be permitted to enroll in PBHL-H 514: Health Economics.
- An undergraduate accounting course with a grade of “C” or better (e.g. PBHL-H 200: Health Care Accounting) or the MHA Accounting primer course must be successfully completed before you will be permitted to enroll in PBHL-H 508: Managing Healthcare Accounting Information for Decision Making.

The MHA primer courses are offered at no additional cost to the matriculating students who do not have the undergraduate course requirements.
Curriculum
The MHA-JD joint degree was recently revised. The updated curriculum will go into effect in fall 2024. Students who started the MHA-JD joint degree prior to fall 2024 are encouraged to make an advising appointment with a Fairbanks School of Public Health advisor to discuss course planning to complete the degree on the old curriculum or discuss transitioning to the new curriculum.

Admissions
Law students who are interested in pursuing the joint MHA-JD degree must apply and be admitted to the Fairbanks School of Public Health through the dual degree application supplement.
Students in the MHA-JD program may be considered for scholarships through the Health Law Center to offset some of the expenses of coursework. You are encouraged to apply to the MHA program during your first year of law school.
Admission criteria
McKinney law students who are interested in pursuing the MHA degree must apply to the Fairbanks School of Public Health through the dual degree application supplement. Students are encouraged to apply during the second semester of their first year of law school.

Steps to apply
Current law students who are interested in the MHA degree will complete the dual degree application supplement and submit the following items:
- Current résumé or CV
- One-page essay addressing the following two questions:
- Where did your interest in health administration originate?
- How do you plan to integrate your professional school degree and health administration degree after graduation?
Students who are offered admission will be required to submit an IU Graduate CAS application. The IU Graduate CAS application fee will be waived; a link from FSPH admissions will be supplied as a next step.
