Minor in Criminology

Criminology is the social scientific study of crime and criminal behavior. Students completing this minor will gain substantive knowledge about the causes and consequences of crime, including the concepts, theories, and research methods applied to the study of crime and criminal behavior. A minor in criminology encourages students to think about crime in its broader social and cultural context, and not just as isolated behavior. In addition, students will develop critical thinking and research skills pertaining to deviant and/or criminal behavior.

A minor in Criminology requires satisfactory completion of the following requirements:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in an IU Indianapolis degree program
  • completion of 15 credit hours, distributed as indicated below,
  • minimum grade of C in each course,
  • 6 credits must be completed at IU Indianapolis
  • to declare the minor, complete the School of Liberal Arts online declaration form,
  • This minor is not open Sociology majors. Only one minor can be earned from the Sociology department (Criminology, Medical Sociology, or Sociology).
