Minor in Arabic and Islamic Studies

The minor in Arabic and Islamic Studies has a double track, one for Arabic language acquisition, and one for cultural studies. The language track focuses on linguistic acquisition. The cultural track takes a global and comparative approach to the study of Islamic history and Muslim societies, emphasizing the diversity of Muslim peoples and cultures in the past and present. Students complete basic requirements in Arabic language and Islamic studies, and choose from a list of electives to complete the 15 credits required for the minor.

A minor in Arabic and Islamic Studies (NELC) requires satisfactory completion of the following requirements:

  • completion of properly distributed credit hour requirements for the baccalaureate degree in effect when the student was admitted to their home school,
  • completion of 15 credit hours, with a minimum grade of C in each course,
  • 6 credits must be completed at IU Indianapolis,
  • 6 credits must be at the 300/400 level
  • to declare the minor, complete the School of Liberal Arts online declaration form here.

Minor Requirements:

Nine credits at any level (9 credits), from the following list or the list below:
  • NELC-A 131: Beginning Arabic I (4 cr.)
  • NELC-A 132: Beginning Arabic II (4 cr.)
  • NELC-A 200: Intermediate Arabic I (3 cr.)
  • NELC-A 250: Intermediate Arabic II (3 cr.)
  • NELC-N 261 / AMST-A 261 / REL-R 261: Introduction to Arab American Studies (3 cr.)
  • REL-R 257: Introduction to Islam (3 cr.)

Six credits at the 300/400 level (6 credits), from the following:

  • NELC-A 300: Advanced Arabic I (3 cr.)
  • NELC-A 350: Advanced Arabic II (3 cr.)
  • NELC-N 308 / REL-R 308: Arab Histories (3 cr.)
  • NELC-N 309 / SPAN-S 309: Arab Spain and Latin America (3 cr.)
  • NELC-N 316 / REL-R 317: The Qur’an (1 cr.)
  • NELC-N 317: Syrian-Lebanese Food and Cooking (1 cr.)
  • NELC-N 318 Islamophobia (1 cr.)
