Intelligent Systems Engineering

This program will equip you with expertise in computational engineering and artificial intelligence to design systems that gather, interpret, and apply data. You'll work on everything from smart sensors to advanced health diagnostics, data systems, and beyond. 

The MS and PhD degrees blend advanced coursework in computational engineering and AI with hands-on experience in designing intelligent systems that collect, interpret, and act on data. 

Bioengineering: Blend life sciences, computing, and engineering to solve real-world challenges in health, biology, and the environment—powered by IU Bloomington’s strengths in tech-driven bioengineering. 

Computer Engineering: Tailor your path with a concentration that covers everything from big data and deep learning to high-performance systems and custom hardware and software solutions. 

Cyber-physical Systems; From robotics to smart homes, explore smart systems that sense and respond to the physical world by combining embedded devices with high-level software and real-world interaction. 

Environmental Engineering: Use biology, chemistry, and tech to address environmental challenges like pollution, climate change, and sustainability through hands-on research and innovation. 

Molecular and Nanoscale Engineering: Design at the atomic level by combining materials science, nanotech, and computing to build responsive systems for medicine, energy, and advanced sensing. 

Neuroengineering:  Bridge brain and tech by studying the nervous system to develop smart devices, brain-computer interfaces, and machines that enhance cognition and healing.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We want to know if your interests and abilities match the program you are applying for and if you seem likely to benefit from an education in the department.  If you think it is helpful, you can supplement the required application materials with other information that sheds light on your capabilities.  A resume or curriculum vitae is ideal for including citations or links to any published work, hardware artifacts, or software artifacts you have produced.

Application Requirements 


Applications must be completed to be reviewed. Completed applications submitted by the priority deadline will be forwarded to the admissions committee for the first round of review.  

  • Personal Statement 
  • CV/Resume 
  • Three Letters of Recommendation: Enter your recommenders’ contact information in the Recommendations section. Once you submit, your recommenders will receive an automated recommendation request. Your recommenders can work on their recommendations while you are working on your application. You can submit your application prior to the recommendations being submitted. The recommendations will attach to your file once they are submitted. 
  • Transcripts: Applicants must upload scanned copies of transcript(s), marks sheet(s), and degree certificate(s) issued by their university’s Registrar. All transcripts must have student’s name and name of school/institution. Documents downloaded from student portals or provided by third-party evaluation services (such as WES) are not accepted.  
     
    If you completed 15 or more credits at another institution and those credits were transferred toward your degree, you must submit the transcripts from that institution. 
  • English Proficiency (for non-native English speakers): Only non-native English speakers who earned an undergraduate degree in the US and are applying to a master’s program are exempt from submitting an English proficiency test score. Otherwise, all non-native English speakers must provide an English proficiency test score to complete their application.   
  • Official test scores need to be sent electronically to Indiana University. You must also upload a scanned copy of your score sheet into the application. It can take a few weeks for scores to be sent and processed, so please plan accordingly. 

  

  • We accept only current TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores, and these can be put into the Test Scores section. Official scores will only attach to an application after submission. 

 

School Code: 1324 

  • TOEFL: For the department codes, go to (please use this link). If the program you are applying to is not listed, use code 99. The suggested minimum score is 100 or 5 (new format). 
  • IELTS: Send scores to “Indiana University Bloomington” from the dropdown menu. The suggested minimum score is 7. 
  • Duolingo: Send scores to “Indiana University – Undergraduate/Graduate.” The suggested minimum score is 130. 
  • GRE scores are not required. If you choose to submit them, you may enter your scores in the Test Scores section of the application. These will be used as unofficial scores until the official results are received. Official GRE scores must be sent directly from ETS to Indiana University using School Code 1324 and Department Code 0402.

ADMISSION STATUS AND NOTIFICATION

We will let you know as soon as we have reached a decision.

Occasionally, denied applicants contact us for an explanation. Unfortunately, we receive several hundred applications per year, and we do not have the staff to explain admission decisions on a case-by-case basis.
