Master of Music in Organ and Sacred Music, Double Major

Admission Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in music or its demonstrated equivalent. For additional information, see "Admission Requirements" in the Graduate Division section of this bulletin.

Major I (Organ)

21 credit hours

  • Q900 Organ Graduate Major (12 cr.), concurrent with I500 Studio Masterclass (0 cr.)
  • I711 Master’s Recital (0 cr.)
  • I501 Department Masterclass (0 cr.), each semester
  • M507 Survey of Organ Literature and Performance Practice I (3 cr.)*
  • M508 Survey of Organ Literature and Performance Practice II (3 cr.)*
  • E589 Organ Pedagogy (2 cr.)
  • E590 Organ Pedagogy Practicum (1 cr.)

*Students with sufficient background in Organ Literature and Performance Practice, as determined by the Organ department chair, can replace M507 Survey of Organ Literature and Performance Practice I and M508 Survey of Organ Literature and Performance Practice II with 6 credits selected from M640 Selected Topics in Organ Repertoire and Performance Practice and C524 Organ Improvisation (courses can be repeated). Students seeking to replace M507 and M508 by examination must do so before or within the first semester of enrollment.

Major II (Sacred Music)

18 credit hours

  • C512 Service Playing II (2 cr.)
  • E521 The Children’s Chorus (3 cr.)
  • C524 Organ Improvisation (2 cr.)
  • C530 The History and Practice of Sacred Music (2 cr.)
  • G560 Graduate Choral Conducting (3 cr.)
  • G538 Choral Rehearsal Techniques (2 cr.)
  • 2 credit hour chosen from
    • F531 Graduate Ear Training for Conductors (1 cr.)
    • F532 Graduate Score Reading (1 cr.)
    • C505 Organ Construction and Design (2 cr.)
Music History and Literature Requirement

6 credit hours. See “Structure of Master’s Curricula” under General Requirements for Master’s Degrees in this bulletin.

Major Ensemble

2 credit hours each fall and spring semester.

Keyboard Proficiency

Completed by exam or passing grades in C511 Service Playing I, and C512 Service Playing II. Students seeking to satisfy these requirements by examination must do so before or within the first semester of enrollment. If these courses are satisfied by examination, then those credit hours are replaced by courses approved by the chair of the organ department, and by the Director of Graduate Studies.
