Music Business

  • MUS N110 Music, Media, and Monetization (3 cr.) This course explores diverse music industry careers in TV, film, advertising, and new media, with guest speakers sharing real-world insights, fostering networking opportunities, and preparing students for success in this dynamic field. It bridges the music and visual media gap, covering creative, financial, and legal aspects of music sync licensing.
  • MUS N210 Law and Business in the Music Industry (3 cr.) This course will focus on the music industry, and the foundational law upon which is it built. Subject matter will cover (i) representation of both creative “talent” and business interests; (ii) record deals; (iii) publishing deals; (iv) band issues including branding and trademarks; and (v) live touring.
  • MUS N220 Ethics and the Music Industry (3 cr.) Students will investigate cases of ethical and unethical behavior on issues such as property, professional integrity, racial/gender bias, and AI to define fundamental terms such as copyright, sampling, plagiarism, infringement, appropriation. Through discussion, debate, and research, students will defend various perspectives and develop personal statements of ethics and music business.
  • MUS N230 Music Distribution (3 cr.) P: N110 Music, Media, and Monetization. This course will explore the inner workings of modern-day music distribution. By examining current practices and work samples from distribution companies, students will simulate the real-world workflow of a distributor by delivering content such as an album release campaign schedule, metadata, playlist pitches, revenue reports, metric analysis, and more.
