Opportunities Outside the College
Jacobs School of Music
Minors
The following requirements apply to minors transcripted by the College:
- Students must complete a minimum of 15 credit hours for the minor;
- Any course in which the student receives a grade below C- cannot be used to fulfill a minor requirement;
- The grade point average of all courses taken in fulfillment of minor requirements must be at least 2.000.
- Students must complete at least 9 credit hours in the minor on the Bloomington campus;
- Students must complete at least 9 credit hours at the 300–400 level.
Eligibility
This minor is open only to students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts in Media, the Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, and the Bachelor of Science in Game Design.
Prerequisites (6 cr.)
Complete one of the following pairs of courses (option a or b below):
- MUS-Z 111 Introduction to Music Theory and MUS-Z 211 Music Theory II
- MUS-T 109 Rudiments of Music I and MUS-T 151 Music Theory and Literature
Requirements
Students must complete 15 credit hours, including the following:
- Required Courses. Complete all of the following:
- MUS-A 100 Introduction to Personal Recording or MUS-Z 361 Introduction to MIDI and Computer Music
- MSCH-P 455 Topics in Music Scoring for Visual Media
- MSCH-X 490 Projects in Media (Approved project: Scoring for Visual Media or MSCH-X 370 Community and Media)
- Electives. Select from the following courses as needed, to complete remaining requirements:
- MUS-K 100 Composition
- MUS-A 100 (if not taken as a required course)
- MUS-Z 361 (if not taken as a required course)
- MUS-O 316 Jazz Arranging I
- MUS-O 317 Jazz Arranging II
- MUS-Z 315 Music for Fun
- MSCH-P 455 Topics in Music Scoring for Visual Media
- MSCH-V 334 Current Topics in Media (Approved topic: Sound and Cinema)
- MSCH-H 452 Honors Seminar in Design and Production (Approved topic: Sound for Games and Mediated Environments)
- MSCH-X 490 Projects in Media (Approved topic: Scoring for Visual Media) or MSCH-X 370 Community and Media
- Other course approved by the directors of undergraduate studies in the Jacobs School of Music and The Media School
In fulfilling the above requirements, students must meet all other College policies and standards regarding minors.
Eligibility
College of Arts and Sciences students are eligible for the Minor in Music Studies in the Jacobs School of Music. In addition, a limited number of courses in the theory and history of music offered in the Jacobs School of Music are counted as "inside hours" for College students. For information on which courses count as "inside hours," please see the course list below and the requirements in "Courses Outside the College."
Requirements
Minimum of 20 credit hours, of which at least 15 (including a minimum of one core course) must be taken on the Bloomington campus.
- Core (6 credit hours). Complete one (1) of the following options:
- MUS-Z 111 Introduction to Music Theory (3 cr.) and MUS-Z 101 Music for the Listener (3 cr.)
- (MUS-Z 111 may be replaced with MUS-Z 211 Music Theory II or MUS-Z 311 Music Theory III based on placement exam)
- MUS-Z 101 Music for the Listener (3 cr.) and MUS-T 109 Rudiments of Music I (3 cr.)
- MUS-T 109 Rudiments of Music I (3 cr.) and MUS-T 151 Music Theory and Literature I (3 cr.)
- MUS-T 151 Music Theory and Literature I (3 cr.) and an additional music elective (3 cr.).
- MUS-Z 111 Introduction to Music Theory (3 cr.) and MUS-Z 101 Music for the Listener (3 cr.)
- Ensemble/Live Performance (2 credit hours)
- Either two semesters of MUS-X 001 All-Campus Ensemble (1 cr.) or by audition, one semester of MUS-X 040 University Instrumental Ensembles (2 cr.), MUS-X 060, Early Music Ensemble (2 cr.), MUS-X 070 University Choral Ensembles (2 cr.), MUS-X 030 Ballet Ensemble (2 cr.), MUS-X 050 Marching Hundred for Non–Music Majors (2 cr.), MUS-Z 161 Steel Drumming (2 cr.), MUS-Z 162 Hand Drumming (2 cr.), or MUS-Z 100 The Live Musical Performance (2 cr.).
- Music Electives (12 credit hours). Electives in music should be chosen based on the student’s background and interest, and with the approval of the director of music undergraduate studies. Elective courses must be chosen from MUS-Z courses or, in the case of music performance study, a maximum of 3 credits may be selected from the following:
- MUS-L 101 Beginning Guitar Class (2 cr.)
- MUS-L 102 Intermediate Guitar Class (2 cr.)
- MUS-L 121 Beginning Guitar Class and Styles (3 cr.)
- MUS-L 122 Intermediate Guitar Class and Styles (3 cr.)
- MUS-P 110 Beginning Piano Class 1, Non-Music Majors (3 cr.)
- MUS-P 120 Beginning Piano Class 2, Non-Music Majors (3 cr.)
- MUS-Z 110 Non-Music Major Performance Elective (2 cr.)
Note: At least 9 of the 12 music elective credits must be at the 300 level or higher. Substitutions for courses with a Z prefix must be approved by both the director of music undergraduate studies and his/her counterpart in the student's home school. Music ensemble credits will not count toward the 12 credits of music electives. The College of Arts and Sciences will count certain courses offered by the Jacobs School of Music as courses taken "Inside" of the College. These courses may also fulfill certain CASE Breadth of Inquiry requirements.
