Introduction

The Program in Animal Behavior (ABEH) encourages students to look at questions of brain, environment, and behavior from several disciplinary perspectives in order to encourage a fuller understanding of the factors influencing and constraining behavior. The undergraduate minor will help students interested in animal behavior develop a background in ethnology, evolution, learning, and neuroscience; provide students with the language they need to transcend the boundaries of a single discipline; and give students an early opportunity to reflect on the consequences of different intellectual approaches to a single problem. Such students will be better prepared to join a scientific community that is just beginning to synthesize traditional research approaches in order to achieve a better understanding of behavior as an interface between genes and the environment, as well as a clearer conception of the relationships among brain, behavior, and evolution.

Undergraduate Minor in Integrative Study of Animal Behavior

Requirements
Six courses are required for an undergraduate minor in animal behavior.

To complete the proposed curriculum, students must complete one basic introductory course each from biology and psychology:

Biology
L111 Introduction to Biology: Evolution and Diversity (3 cr.)
L112 Introduction to Biology: Biological Mechanisms (3 cr.)
E111 Basic Biology by Examination I (3 cr.)
E112 Basic Biology by Examination II (3 cr.)

Psychology
P101 Introductory Psychology I (3 cr.)
P102 Introductory Psychology II (3 cr.)
P106 General Psychology, Honors (4 cr.)

In addition, students must complete one course from each of the following four categories:

Evolution:
L318 Evolution (3 cr.) or
S318 Evolution, Honors (4 cr.)

Learning and Development:
P325 The Psychology of Learning (3 cr.) or
P444 Developmental Psychobiology (3 cr.)

Neuroscience:
P326 Behavioral Neuroscience (3 cr.)

Overview:
Z460 Ethology (3 cr.) or
P417 Animal Behavior (3 cr.)

Undergraduate Area Certificate

In order to complete the area certificate, in addition to the requirements for the minor, the student must complete an additional seminar from the following list:

Biology
L341 Natural History of Coral Reefs (3 cr.)
L376 Biology of Birds (3 cr.)
L433 Tropical Biology (3 cr.)
L465 Advanced Field Biology (3 cr.)
L473 Ecology (3 cr.)
L474 Field and Laboratory Ecology (2 cr.)
L479 Evolution and Ecology (4 cr.)
Z466 Endocrinology (3 cr.)

Or an offering in field biology from a recognized biological field station

Psychology
P410 Development of the Brain and Behavior (3 cr.)
P411 Neural Bases of Learning and Memory (3 cr.)
P416 Evolution and Ecology of Learning (3 cr.)

Finally, students must complete at least 3 hours of independent research, including the submission of a written analysis of the research, in either biology or psychology:

Biology
L490 Individual Study (3 cr.)

Psychology
P493 Supervised Research I (3 cr.)
