About the Program

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Education with a major in Educational Leadership at IU South Bend is designed to prepare candidates to be K-12 principals in area school corporations. The degree program is awaiting final approval from the Indiana Commission on Higher Education.

As principals, graduates of the M.S. in Education (Educational Leadershi)p promote the success of every student by:

• Facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a school or district vision of learning supported by the school community.
• Advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.
• Ensuring management of the organization, operation, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment.
• Collaborating with faculty and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources.
• Acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.
• Understanding, responding to, and influencing the political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context.
• Recruiting, hiring, assigning, retaining, and supporting effective teachers.

Additionally, candidates in the program are required to complete an internship in the final semester of the program. This provides significant opportunities for candidates to synthesize and apply the knowledge and practice and develop the skills through substantial, sustained, standards-based work in real settings, planned and guided cooperatively by the institution and school district personnel for graduate credit.

Prerequisite Coursework

The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 or better (on a 4-point scale) or specific GRE scores if the CGPA between 2.5 and 2.999.

Financial Support

Student financial support will be available according to current practice and policies for IU South Bend graduate students. The School of Education also has one scholarship, The Faculty Scholarship, for graduate students.
