M.J. Admissions

If you are interested in developing a better understanding of the law as it affects your professional and career goals, but you don’t wish to practice law, the M.J. is designed for you.

About the Program

As an M.J. candidate, you will design your own curriculum in consultation with an IU McKinney faculty member who can guide you to the classes that will be most beneficial for your professional goals.

Curriculum

30 credit hours may be taken full time (day) or part time (evening). You will create your own individualized curriculum that best suits your needs based on your area of interest.

2 required classes include:

  • Legal Process (2 credits)
  • Your choice of one of the following courses:
    • Property (4 cr.)
    • Contracts (3 or 4 cr.)
    • Torts (4 cr.)
    • Criminal Law (3 cr.)
    • Constitutional Law (4 cr.)

You may choose the remaining credit hours from among the course list available online
at http://mckinneylaw.iu.edu/degrees/mj/_docs/courselist.pdf

Eligibility

To be eligible for admission to the M.J. degree program you must hold a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. institution of higher learning or an equivalent academic degree from an educational institution in a country other than the United States. Holders of a J.D. and other law degrees are ineligible for this degree.

Admissions Timeline

Admissions will be decided on a rolling basis. Class size will be limited, however, so you are encouraged to apply early. The first M.J. class will begin during the summer

Cost

The cost of the M.J. degree is the same as the J.D. per credit hour fee for in-state and out-of-state residents. Scholarships are available.
